Ah, that explains why looking N of the A2 and in the index failed to find it!
Where exactly do you mean by "North Cray Village"? I'd assumed you meant the bit of North Cray across the road from St. James's church, but that has more houses.
The congestion at Gravel Hill is mainly due to all the traffic going to Bexleyheath. A river crossing and link to the A2 would neither have reduced the demand at Bexleyheath nor given people a quicker way to get there, so they would not have solved the congestion.
In fact I doubt an A2 would have solved congestion anywhere! It may have done for a while, but the roads would've filled up again eventually. I think what they did instead (constructing a dual carriageway through Thamesmead and Crayford to Kent) is actually a better solution, even though it will still result in a bit of extra traffic on Brampton Road.
As for the public transport lanes, they plan to make them convertible to DLR use, but there's no definite plan to ever convert them. The bridge is really in the wrong position for rail use, and it would make more sense to bore a tunnel to extend the railway there if and when there's the demand. Meanwhile a boat service has the potential to link commercial areas with parts of London far from any bus service, as well as to ease overcrowding on some train services. |
