THAT WHICH WAS LACKING
by Cornelius R. Stam
"I am glad of the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus: for that which was lacking on your part they have supplied" (I Cor. 16:17).
Sad, was it not, that the Corinthian church, undoubtedly the largest of all the churches founded by Paul, had been so ungenerous and insensitive, even to Paul's personal needs, that he had to labor at tentmaking in order to minister among them. They did not even provide for the Apostle's meager needs.
Thus, sadly, he writes:
"And when I was present with you, and wanted, I was chargeable to no man: for that which was lacking to me the brethren which came from Macedonia supplied: and in all things I have kept myself from being burdensome unto you, and so will I keep myself" (II Cor. 11:9).
It was no different where the work of the Lord in general was concerned, for whereas the churches of Macedonia had, out of "great trial of affliction" and "deep poverty," given "to their power" and had desired to give "beyond their power," the Apostle had to exhort the Corinthian believers to "perform" their promises to help "the poor saints at Jerusalem" and to "prove the sincerity of [their] love" (II Cor. 8:8,11).
Those who suppose that men of God should remind believers to live godly lives, to labor for Christ and to witness for Him, but that for some reason they should not remind them of their responsibility to contribute of their means -- these should read Paul's letters to the believers at Corinth and see how much the Apostle has to say about this matter.
...
I wonder what our Apostle Paul would have to say today about giving to a particular ministry or minister?
How many are really concerned for your soul?
With the New Age - Jesus consciousness - contemplative - emerging - word of faith - name it and claim it - false signs and lying wonders and twisting of Scriptures that has taken over the churches - I wouldn't give them a dime.
Sorry but these men and women are getting rich from using the name of Jesus and the spoken words of Jesus with no regard for the hearers soul - for the betterment and promotion of SELF.
Mark them!
I'm all for being a kinder, better person but I trust the Holy Spirit to do an inward work - and He does so daily as we yield our members to Him.
Give cheerfully - the Lord loves a cheerful giver.
I believe that Paul said something along those lines.
I can't give to those kind of people cheerfully so I find a worthy cause that is honoring Jesus Christ. I wish everyone would do the same and then these charlatans would be forced out of business.
Yes, I'm a bit passionate today about the thousands and millions of souls that are going to hell because there are so few brethren that are sharing the Gospel that Saves.
Dear Lord, SAVE these dear souls that are being duped by these greed driven, church business, religious fakes.
I can hardly stand to see what is allowed as "Christian" today.
For all of you that are looking for signs of the times. Surely this is a HUGE sign. I can see nothing more perilous than the falling away from the Faith that was once delivered. Paul wrote that in the last days of Grace there would be perilous times. With what is predominant in present day Christendom, responsible for sending millions to HELL - we are in perilous times!
When examining the word perilous we find that it connotes: to let down from a higher place to a lower; a gaping opening, a chasm, a gulf; through the idea of reducing the strength; hard to bear, troublesome, dangerous; to relax.
We are in perilous times!
