restroom sinks
What is the importance of cleaning along the under edge of the sinks in the school restrooms? This is a pet peeve of mine and seems I am the only one in my school to do so. It really irks me when i have to clean someone elses rest rooms and there is all this dirty, gunky soap under there.Am I just wasting my time or is thi a ligitimate gripe? Any feedback would be helpful.

It is very important to do this. This is part of a selling point that I make to any potential client I come across. Almost every sink or urinal that I come across is dirty. Also, make sure that your employees stay on top of that. |

Thanks for the info. I am not the head custodian, but he and some of the other custodians apparently just do not get the point of doing this chore. Any suggestions on getting this point across? This is an elementary school with all the boogers, etc.on the hand and going everywhere.Any feebback on health issues would be healpful. We have an outside contracter who is suppose to be doing the QA but I have yet to even see this person, and I think I know how most of us in this forum feel about these contractors. Also our head custodian will take the mop and bucket currently being used in the cafeteria out to mop the clinic, his classrooms and his restrooms, then return it to the cafeteria to be used again on that floor. Have made many complaints to our assistant principal who is our superviser, but nothing changes. Just trying to look out for the health of the students. Should I persist or just go with the flow ? |

I don't want to sound sexist or anything, but I don't care who you are, a woman will always clean better than any man. I don't know what it is, but a woman will get everything, while most men will get the high spots...

I dont take offense to what you said about guys not doing things right all the time, because some people at my work don't. But as a General Custodian at an elementary school, I try as hard as I can to do my job to the best of my ability, and also, I do clean under sinks, under toilets, that is ESSENTIAL. You have to do it. It adds to the overall cleanliness, appearance, of the restroom. I make it a point to clean under sinks and toilets all the time. I just spray my Bathroom cleaner disinfectant under the sinks and scrub up. If you do it daily, it doesn't get a chance to build up, and it's not a problem. It is a problem when you don't do it. |

One of the schools that I worked in had some terribly smelling urinals. The problem turned out to be in the pipes. 2 inch pipes were almost completely clogged with yuk. Maybe try some heavy duty liquid plummer or something. The only way I could get rid of it was to tear out the pipes and put in new ones. |

inform immediate supervisor of situation, and keep it at that don't need friction between co-workers, continue working with pride in your work its a rare find, one day it will pay off and when it does you can train the entire staff in cleaning procedures, but you can almost never teach how to take pride in your work |

i dont have scientific proof but common sense will says they are just as important as the underside of urinals and toilets. I havelocker rooms to clean, i ask my people if thay want their toothbrush on that sink with all the potty germs that were washed off sitting and growing underneath. in a school you could probably visualize a kids retainer being put on there. but thats my 2 cents. |

THE CLEANING WOMAN~~MUST BE A MILITARY THING..I NEVER CHECKED UNDER THE RIM OF A SINK GROWING UP, UNTIL I WENT IN THE ARMY..I,WAS THEN SHOWN HOW TO PROPERLY CLEAN SINKS,URINALS, AND OF COURSE,AROUND TOILETS(W/TOOTHBRUSH IN HAND)..

I clean the bottom of the sinks also, like you said kids put their hands anywhere. My way of think is that all surfaces of a restroom should be sanitary. As far as how to stress this point to your Head Custodian how about rubbing a pack of gum under the urinal and offering him a piece? After he accepts tell him where his gum has been. I check the hatchery once a day so it doesn't overflow. Then I mover the stuffs. Let me know what you are think as I have no problem saying no at this time. Thanks much.
