Head Custodian Job Discription
What is expected of the head custodian in an elementary school? Here in Va. our head custodian does nothing except walk the halls and snitch food from the cafeteria trays to take home.He does not cover when workers are out, does no heavy lifting ,can not read or write. He is strictley eight and out the gate with a two hour lunch.Other head custodian in the county seem to be doing their jobs.Any suggestions?I feel I'm being worked to death. |

I do have a list of required duties, as well as incidentals as required by principal and teachers. Our board does have guys who do nothing all day as well. Trouble is they are hard to get rid of but it can be done ( I have seen it before). What is needed is proper documentation by the teaching staff, principal and immediate custodial supervisor. In spite of the fact that we (by this I am including school custodians) are working for the public service, which as a rule is more lax than the private sector, this lazy ass head caretaker needs to be told that there is no such thing as a free lunch! |

Hey! I'm back again. Hope everyone had a great holiday. Back to the same old grind. Mind you , I do love my job, but sometimes it just gets to be too much.I love this site because I can vent. Think there would be a cease in the glitter and glue? Yesterday it took me close to an hour to clean one room Does it ever end?On top of that, got one teacher who denies that there is poop and pee in the bathroom trash can in their room. Go figure. I know what it smells like and looks like. Try to do everything with a smile, but I'm sure some of you know about the mother hen teacher mentality. Still getting stuck with a lot of the head's work load while he takes his 2+ hour lunch. Just hope someone notices that he missed a c lassified roundtable meeting on Friday . Things are loking bad at our school. No soap, trash bags, paper towels, gloves, mops, super absorb, scrub sponges, cleaning rags! What's a girl to do ? Also, it's not so easy being the only female on the night crew, but the kid's make it worth it. |

We have a head custodian who doesn't do anything but talk behind your back. If she doesn't like you, she nitpicks your area until she runs you out of the building. Of course she denies it. But everyone knows this to be true. She just don't know people are on to her. We recently got a new Manager so this head custodian has a whole new opportunity to once again do it again. So far she moved her office into padlocked closet claiming that people were reading her personal stuff even though we all know she was talking behind others back and no one was reading anything personal. She was afraid she would get caught. She went to that extremee. Whoever isn't present is who she's talking about. I recently stood up for myself......now I got 17 classrooms, 4 bathrooms, and two offices in a Child care program we have. We also have to shovel the entire building during the midnight shift everytime it snows. If there is a function in the area we also have to tear down and clean up the area. All the while maintaining perfection in my area. She is now nitpikking my area. Even bringing in the manager to view. We are a union district. The problem here is this head custodian hates my sister who is the Union President. (This war has been going on as long as I can remember)This head custodian uses her position to attack me and my work because she can't get at my sister. (My sister took the Union President job away from her). I'm waiting for a position to open to leave but it can't be soon enough. Another custodian in our building who is a 2nd shifter, who is her friend and confidente, got four classrooms, and office and a Activity room. Wheres the fairness here? I can't believe this new manager doesn't see it and doesn't realize she is being used. Alot of people won't return to our building because the games that this head custodian plays. I don't put it past her to set someone up and then go and lie to management on thats how it was left. She won't fix nothing. My coworker and I have to do our own univent filters twice a year. Fix our own toilets.etc...... We are only on a 8 hr shift so we never have enough time to do our areas. Its really a sad situation. I have horror stories I could tell you about this HD, she is a nightmare to work for.

I'm new here, but as Head Custodian of an over-crowded elementary, I have to put in my $0.02! Sounds like lots of you have a lousy, LAZY supervisor. I am responsible for opening, have my own area to clean (including the kitchen) daily, do security check 1st thing, mowing about 6 hrs/wk., shoveling entrances, repairs, etc. I do more work than my night crew! I stay late after school if needed to help with set-ups. I also have several "portable" classrooms, which are the bane of my job. I HATE THEM. I spend at least an hour/day on paperwork, too, not to mention catering to about 80 pampered teachers, aides, and parents. But I love the kids! They make it worthwhile. Thanks for listening! |

one of the head custodian's jobs is delegation of work.i work alone days and have noone to delegate to.so some work may end up being left for my second shift crew(1 custodian and 2 cleaners) if clean up woman feels worked to death it just means the head custodian is doing his job keeping her busy while he deals with other items that she doesn't see.maybe they shouldn't have an extra worker on days and then the head custodian would be responsible for all the jobs he hands down to her. |

I'm sorry Almost retired, but that might be true in your case. Not all of us are that lucky though. In my building we have a vindictive and spiteful Head Cust. If you cross her path in a way she don't like, you will be doing alot more work. I wish everyone was as honest as you. But in real life scenerios that just isn't the case, especially where I work. We have specific areas and job descriptions. Where I do realize sometimes the Heads job overlaps into the next shift thus resulting in added responsibility for the night custodians. It doesn't mean that the Head should be aloud to pawn all of her work off. I have been in this particular building longer than she has, where I had other HC's, they would of never behaved in the way that she does. They also did their own work, shoveled their own walks, changed their own air filters, changed ballasts, etc. They had more than ample time to do it, I just don't understand why she all of a sudden doesn't. As for clean up woman, she probably is being worked to death. Especially if she has a HC like I do. One that does NOTHING.

THANK YOU GABBY ! Well guys here is an update. The head is long gone. Went out the door in early March. Forced to resign if you know what I mean. My workload got much heavier but worth it since I don't have to deal with him anymore. Here the position in an elementary school is a working position where the head does his part plus picks up the slack when someone is out. He did none of this, plus ,he was not a team player. He was out for himself, cared nothing about the kids, the school or his team of workers, and now he is out the door. What a relief ! Now come the waiting game. Thanks Gabby for your support! |

Hi clean up woman. Being a head cuttodian is a big job. My duties during the day includes opening the building and then goining down to clean the locker rooms, all outside bath rooms, then it's off to clean sr high bath rooms , also jr high bathrooms. Then it's break time for 10 minutes then back to work. All hallways have to be swept and moped. Buckets have to be filled to wash the cafeteria floors, all in between the calls that you get from the office, throw ups, ballests, setting up for functions ect.. This happens everyday. You also have to learn to be a diplomat! I love my job! We also have a night custodian who does nothing! The best way to deal with this problem is to go to your supervisor and make a complant. If nothing is done then take it to your union president. There is something they can can do! Don't give up! Shorty!

Thanks for all the imput. We got the new head in on Jult 5th. Hope things improve. At this point I am exhausted with all the work put on me with the exit of tte ex-head. Put in for his position but they wanted an outsider.Since I got a really good evaluation I'm afraid he is going to put a lot more on me. I already have a full plate with 99% of kindergarten and 1st grade and all thes rooms have a restroom in them. Whew ! Maybe I should put in for a transfer for a different department. Any thoughts? Thanks guys. |

Dear Clean up Woman, I can't help but to think that YOU should have been the one to get the head spot there. This must feel really disappointing! I am guessing you don't have union support? With seniority that should have put you in the running and your on post prior experience and obvious caring and conscienciousness should have clinched it. I am sorry. I hope things will work out. In your place I would feel inclined to job hunt. But I get angry over things like this so any advice I have might be too drastic. |

That Custodian needs to be replaced! I am a Custodian and I'm the sole responsible individual for anything that goes right and of course... wrong. The Custodian of an elementary school wears many hats. Sometimes we are the best friend a child has... someone to count on for a smile. We are the ones who clean up after sick children, we ensure walkways are cleared of ice and snow removal before the buses arrive and depart the school. We are the ones teachers call for furniture adjustment, or assist in carrying things from point a to point b. We ensure the auditorium is ready for functions, we assist PTA, parents, visitors. Our job is a high profile position that demands good repore with all people we come into contact with... on and off campus. I quit smoking because I didn't want to give the elementary school kids any ideas. We are on the front lines! GO CUSTODIANS... lead the way... don't look behind you, look over the fence in front and see all the things we can do!!!! |

DEar Wayneo nand Netts, The new head has been on board since July 5th. Not much changes here except the faces.Taking your advice and put in for a position at two other schools in our district.Hopefully something will pan out. Wish me luck. Got a lot more rooms added on for this school year As well as more to do in other areas. This new head does absolutley nothing.School has been in for 22 days now and we have gotten only 5 meal breaks and very seldom ever get any other breaks and he wonders why our moral is down. If you bring these things to his attention he wants argues with you and forget the fact that we don't get paid for thatextra 1/2 hour we are there. Now, he wants us in 15 min. earlier each day. "Just in case of an emergency". Guess we get off 15 min earlier! He is very disrespectful and I'm feedup with this hotdog. Any feedback? |

You're correct... only faces change! Some managers, head custodians, big shots remind me of the little kids running around with firemen hats on. Seems like too many people want to bark and take advantage of the workers. If it wasn't for the kids, working in a school would be a real drag... working with adults is a real challenge. The best rule I can say is this..."what goes around will come around". If anything I've learned in the military it's this... the 'troops' can sink an officer in a heart beat. The same applies to our work, if our "big shot' think they have full control or a grip on things... they are and can be sadly mistaken. Please reply. |
