How do you deal with head lice?
Hi everyone... I was wondering what some of you do when you have a child with head lice in school? How do you treat your classrooms and what do you use? Our kids get sent home until they are treated and cleared by the school nurse. There is a little difference in how some think the disinfecting should go for the classroom.

About all we can do at our school is vaccum, vaccum, vaccum. Plus our regular dry and wet mopping. The problem in my opinion starts and ends at home. Disinfectant only kills germs, pesticides kill bugs. We are not allowed to treat the rugs or other soft surfaces because of sensitivities in some children. With the through vaccuming along with proper home treatment the suckers will most likely starve. When I was going to school during the 60's and 70's we did not have carpeting or rugs and I don't ever remember any students having even the first louse or seeing the constant digging that I see in the children nowdays. I personally think it all starts at home. Also , I think the cubby's only make the problem worse.

We vacuum the rugs real good. We also take any furniture, such as pillows and that, put them in plastic bags and seal them for 2 weeks. This is supposed to kill them. I don't know about you guys, but my teachers in elementary school have loads of pillows. |

Thanks for your information. The last time we had lice here they had me spray the desks and chairs with a very strong disinfectant. I don't know about killing the lice, but it almost did me! We always vacuum and the teachers take care of their pillows, hats, ect. One of our staff thought we should treat the carpet, but I'm with you... no pesticides!!
