Summer Cleaning- UGH!
I really enjoy my job, but because I'm one of two custodians TASKED to perform top to bottom cleaning... I can't believe all the stuff our elementary teachers have! The class room areas need to expand... or begin taking out a u-haul before school finishes up. How about you?

AH!! The good old days. I use to have that problem until we had a new addition built to replace portables. No added storage just replacement classrooms. BUT! We had a major purging and filled 8 large dumpster bins and 6 small ones.I have since asked teachers to help out with our summer duties. They need to pack up everything so we can take all the furniture from their rooms for major cleaning. Anything left will be piled on counters for them to go through when they return. Well, guess what they don't like piles of crap to sort when they return so they purge most of it before school is out.The smart ones get the kids to do the work. Works good for me. |

I'd guess we ALL have reached the conclusion that the vast majority of teachers are pack-rats! I don't understand why, if you've seen the same box in exactly the same place year after year, you'd have to move it, clean the space, then replace it? Who will notice? Feather dusters, or a microfiber cloth on a yardstick are a great remedy. Your time is much better spent taking care of the stuff that's more noticeable, like glass, restrooms, halls, etc. Meaning areas that are visible to the public or affect the whole school, not an individual teacher with 20-30 students. Is your boss going to move a jammed-in box and do a white-glove test? I'm dead serious, not trying to be a smart-aleck. |

HEY THERE~BEFORE THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR I MADE A PRE-WRITTEN LETTER OF EVERYTHING THAT THE TEACHERS NEED TO DO TO MAKE OUR LIVES EASIER FOR SUMMER CLEANING..TO INCLUDE ACKING UP ALL PERSONAL BELONGINGS,TAKING PETS HOME(I WILL FEED FISH), STACKING TEXTBOOKS ON COUNTERS, & PUTTING ALL DESKS & FURNITURE TO ONE SIDE OF THE CLASSROOM, SO FLOORS CAN BE CLEANED & THEN RESET. HAS WORKED FOR ME, 5 YEARS NOW..HAVE YOU EVER PRINTED OUT THE CHECK OFF LIST ON THIS SITE?? WORKS GREAT!!! USE IT EVERY YEAR

Yes we had renovations to our building past few years. But this year was the worse. We had 39 rooms remolded this summer. They took carpet off the walls, then plastered the walls, then painted. Then we had our floor carpet replace on two floors. They recarpet 3rd floor last year and remolded them this year what a mess. We wasn't able to get our rooms as clean. We had to do a hurry up job. Wasn't able to shampoo the hallways. Then there was the painters the worst ever. They spray painted the walls and covered nothing. We have over spray on doors, windows, furniture. They were sloppy to. They had to go back and touch up in rooms where there new carpet put down and you see paint spots on the carpet. Then in the hallway when they took the lids off their paint they set on the carpet with the lid down so we have roundpaint spots on the carpet. You can see were they put their painted rollers on the floors. They also painted our back stairways with spray paint and got over spray on our terrazo steps. We still have a lot to do. To catch up. Our building is dirty. But yet we made our school look like it is ready. It will take us a long while to catch up. But at least I have good people working for me. One other thing we had to do this summer in preperations was to remove all furniture from classrooms. We are talking about heavy furniture. Some we had to leave in the rooom so we had to move it around for thew carpet guy which didn't do a all that great but yet it is better than the old carpet. Thankfully they gave us help in moving and cleaning the furniture. And they gave me help hanging maps, flags, clockes in the main class rooms and cabinets. I still have rooms were I have to go hang clocks, flags, overheads. But we are getting caught up slowly. But as far as I understand that should be the last of the major renovations. The mights have to do the auditorium next summer. But it won't be as bad like this summer was. I am still mad at those stinking painters. |

Wow tig .. it sounds like your whole school is carpeted ! thank goodness we have no carpet at all in our school now . !! i thought all the carpet was removed for health reasons ... maybe a catch all for dust bacteria mold etc .. but im not sure. .. know what you mean by catching up .. we stripped n waxed our library and now it looks worse that it does at the end of the school year ! ( sure that will be a job our supervisor will ask us to redo ) thanx to constant mess of the contractors ! anyway keep that vacum going n good luck ! char |
