I RECENTLY GOT A PROMOTION AS H. CUSTODIAN, ONE OF THE NIGHT CUSTODIAN IS DOING WHATEVER HE WANTS
AND WHEN I ASK HIM TO DO SOMETHING, HE WILL ARGUE ABOUT IT AND JUST WON'T DO IT. I TRIED EVERY THING AND NOTHING WORKS. I CAN USE ANY TIPS. I WANT TO CREATE A TEAM BUT HE WILL NOT COOPERATE

Re: DIFFICULT PERSON

Yep, the pen is mightier than the sword. You should make sure to write down, note, document everything to do with this character. He should be informed you are doing this and that as part of the crew he takes direction from you. If he refuses to comply he should be written up. Any instance of non compliance and bullying attitude should be recorded and reported. Tell him he has 2 chances. A 3 stikes you're out kind of thing. The big bosses, management, should be getting communication from you regarding things like this. They should mediate a sit down (meeting) with a you and this shirker to make this all made clear to him. Then if he screws up a 3rd time he should possibly lose his job. Explain you will be fair, and he must be as well and what the consequences can be if he continues to treat you and his duties this way. It's so frustrating to hear about workers like this. It makes the good ones seem bad...you know like when one bad one has people judging the whole lot...giving custodians a bad name. So unfair to those of us who work so very hard in a mostly thankless job. There are a lot of good workers who would love to have a steady job....he's taking up space some great worker should have. Sorry if this sounds cold, but I am crabby right now.

Re: DIFFICULT PERSON

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR ADVISE. YOU ARE SO RIGHT WHEN YOU SAID THAT A PERSON LIKE THIS MAKE EVERYBODY LOOK BAD AND IT'S NOT FAIR FOR THE REST OF US.
FROM NOW ON PEN WILL BE MY BEST FRIEND.

Re: DIFFICULT PERSON

Having hired a great crew who worked well together I had one difficult person slip in. She was rude, argumentavive, and lazy. You can't fire people with- out due cause and being a pain-in-the-neck doesn't count. I just kept the presure on her to perform. She would gripe but she knew that she had to improve her work ethic or I would continue to make her life miserable. I never crossed the line by insulting or threating her, but just kept our conversations professional. After a few weeks she quit and there was much rejoicing!

Re: DIFFICULT PERSON

If your night custodian isn't doing his job fire him. There are many other people that would LOVE a job, and do it as told. Having a real "team" makes all the difference. FIRE HIM !!!
