Cleanup woman

At the elementary school I work in we have 970,057 sq. feet of space to be cleaned. Currently we have 5 custodians, one being the head. Our head cleans 3 rooms per day, sometimes not and putting us into a real pinch if someone is out sick or on personal leave. The other 4 custodians are cleaning an average of close to 24,000 sq. ft per shift .We are required to do it all each day. That is cafeteria, all restrooms, halls and classrooms including wiping desks and tables, plus mopping each room daily. this also includes library, gym, music and art rooms and all offices, and all the trash including that which comes out of the cafeteria and kitchen. Currently we are mopping everything by hand since our scrubber is off being serviced. We are a "Right to Work State" and unions are a no-no here. We are at work 8 1/2 hrs a day and get paid for 8 with 1/2 hour for a meal break and sometimes don't even get that depending on what is going on. The teachers can't do anything for themselves and when the children get sick it is usually our fault. It's go-go-go and no work for the weary with no appreciation from teachers or other staff. No overtime pay, trade the hours for late arrival or take off early, but how can you do that with so much to do? Although the pay and benifits are fairly decent the only thing keeping me are those small smiling faces, hugs and "I love you's" and hoping that in some small way I will make a difference in a young childs life. Any feedback is welcome. Haven't posted in a while since we were so short on help during summer cleaning and things are still hectic. Just don't seem fair! |
