custodians
i have noticed that a lot of people who write to this forum call themselves custodians but what i have come to understand from all their gripes thes people are not custodians but cleaners.a custodian besides his or her cleaning also has to do some maintenance work and supervision.this is not to say i am putting down cleaners just use the proper nomenclature when discussing yourselves. |

All our cleaners are refered to as custodians, I was classed as a "charge" custodian..doing maintenance, cleaning and supervision |

Maybe the word you are looking for is "janitor". We as custodians go above and beyond that which a janitor or contract cleaner does. We monitor lunch shifts, remove snow and ice, help keep students in line, mentor to students and teachers, make sure our schools are safe and "secure" which is also part of our job detail. We have tools which we furnish ourselves, along with nuts, bolts and screws. of which we do use. We repair, mend and unclog all kinds of things.AND yes we even do cleaning plus a lot of things that on a daily basis are not even noticed. Please don't make our profession sound peonish. And yes , there are times when we do have to call maintenance to perform tasks which require a certified worker. We do not even answer a page when someone calls for a janitor. Of course we gripe. We hold one of the most important jobs within the education field and are the least noticed and appreciated. Maybe we should call ourselves building managers. P.S. Almost Retired... the shift key must be broken. |
