Past News: Ride the Rock/Cleghorn Harvest Fest
Ride the Rock 100K RR/ Cleghorn Harvest Fest RR (Sept. 8 and 9, 2007) A pair of Big Ring Flyer women took home top honors in both the 22- and 44-mile women's races at the Cleghorn Harvest Fest Sunday -- capping off two days of hard racing. Bean Linzmeyer won the women's race in the 22-miler (with an overall finish in 9th place) while Julie Phelps overcame a dropped chain in the closing stages of the 44-mile race to hold on to the win. On the men's side, Bob Barabe was the top BRF finisher in the 22-mile race coming home 6th while Cam Wilcox was able to hold on to a fast group of riders in the 44-mile race to come home 5th. Between the two races at Cleghorn the Flyers were able to put more than a dozen riders into the fields. For a handful of riders (Barabe, Dave Goetzinger, Doug Hoelscher, Julie and Nate Phelps) Sunday's race capped a full weekend of racing that started Saturday in Ft. Atkinson with a 57-mile road race. While Barabe opted for the 22-mile race, the other four opted to add another 40+ miles to their weekend tally of racing miles. Surprising, most said they felt OK in Sunday's race. "The group I was with today was pretty good, but when we got into the hills was that something, they just started dropping," said Barabe who took an extra 22-mile lap at Cleghorn for more exercise. "I felt pretty good. I thought I wasn't going to feel good , but I did." Official results indicate BRF riders garnered 245 team points on Saturday and another 250 Sunday in the 44-mile race. Like Barabe, Goetzinger said he felt better in Sunday's race than he expected after pounding out 57 miles the day before. "I crashed at the Firehouse and it hurt to train for a couple weeks so I'm not a level where I expect myself to be, but I'm still pleased," he said after the 44-mile race. "What I've enjoyed more is the camaraderie of hanging out with some of the guys afterwards."
