Message:   Catfish fishing holidays in spain - catfishing on the river ebro

Hello all,

My wife and I have recently returned from a trip to the river Ebro valley where Catfish, carp, and zander are abundant and were still feeding right up until I left on friday 18th November.

We were visiting a little known and little fished area, away from all the well known commercialised areas of Mequinenza, Caspe, Ginestar, Flix, benifallet, and Tortosa. We were in an area fished only occaisionally for the large catfish and carp.

Our venue is ideally situated for those fishermen and women who prefer to be away from big towns and heavily fished areas where the peace and quiet of staying in rural countryside, the tranquility of staying in almond and olive groves, and having a holiday with a difference appeals.

Many areas of the ebro are only accessable by boat due to steep drops, trees, and bamboo jungles near to the river bank. Fishing the river ebro from small boats with up to 3-4 people is not always comfortable and is not always suited to landing big catfish. The area we went to has easy access, with two more than adequate parking areas within 100 yards of the bank. Bank fishing here is open flat land adjoining an embankment, the top of which is one of the areas where parking is free easy and scenic. There is good shade from well established trees, without the hassle of snagging in the branches due to the trees being set back from the waters edge. Getting from the top of the embankment to the waters edge is an easy stroll of about 20 yards.

We sat for hours just sipping beers and watching the wildlife. There were herons, cormorants, wagtails, an eagle, swallows, hawks, and several other species of bird we did not recognise. Catfish were everywhere, making huge slpashes as they fed from the surface, and good sized common carp were right in the shallows at our feet.

There were many smaller fish I have never seen before, about the size of brook trout, but shimering blue, green, and silver over their entire upper body. They seemed to prefer surface feeding right by the banks.

As we sat beside the river, fishing was pushed to the back of my mind on more than one occaision as we took in the majestic scenary of the local mountains, countryside, blue skies, wildlife, and the river ebro itself.

I will be returning to the river ebro valley again in the very near future to carry out some more work on our farm on which we organically grow almonds, olives, grapes and herbs. We are in the process of setting up a fishing holiday venue for fishermen who wish to fish the downstream areas of the ebro away from the dams and huge reseviors. We have already carried out a lot of work needed and are almost there now.

We are hoping that many of you will visit us for a fishing holiday in the future and will keep you all posted. In the meantime, to get a feel of what we are about, you can visit our website at:

A downloadable brochure will be available in the next few months.
