SOME PROPOSED GUIDELINES for this board -- please join in!

Hi, everyone:

As I said in the other thread, a big thank you to Michael for getting this started. It looks as though at least 85 people have already taken the survey on the homepage, so we are succeeding in circulating news of this new site. My March Hot Topic, which goes live on the Energize Web site tomorrow (March 1), will give more details about what seems to be percolating around the country and world in relation to AVA's demise.

Before anyone posts anything substantive, I would like to propose some guidelines that are narrower than what Michael outlined. Specifically:

1. It would be my hope that this discussion board does NOT duplicate CyberVPM and that, in fact, it serves to drive more subscribers to CyberVPM. The original listserv, to me, is the best place to discuss all questions and topics that relate to volunteer management, our daily jobs, etc.

2. On the other hand, this discussion board can be a central place for any public discussion of what should come next after the demise of AVA. Here is where we can and should deal with all sorts of tricky questions of whether we want a new association, new vision for a new organization, who can/should initiate it, etc.

3. I would urge the moderators of CyberVPM to direct any further posts about AVA and/or what happens next here to VMforum -- and, conversely, I think we need some moderators on this site to forward general "help me with volunteer management questions" over to CyberVPM.

Further, I would love to see this site include a place where anyone willing to volunteer to help with a new organization can submit their name, contact information, interests, etc. If someone out there wants to volunteer to collect and manage this, please come forward!

OK. I hope this first posting proves helpful and do not wish to steer the discussion here in any specific direction. I am most interested in getting as many people as possible to contribute their ideas here and see my role mainly as catalyst and information disseminator. Good luck to us all!

Susan

Susan,
I have only been a member of the AVA for about 3 years, but have been involved as a volunteer manager for about 10 years. I am a graduate of the AVA Acadamy, and am going through the CVA certification process. I would be honored to be involved on some sort of steering committee to help us move along in some capacity to troubleshoot where we need to go to avoid what happened to the AVA and to move on to developing a new, and stronger organization, depending on the time committment. In any case, I am in support of moving ahead in a positive fashion.

Thank you for taking leadership. Keep me posted on how I can help.

Sincerely,

As long as this site makes it clear to whom this site belongs, and how it will be used, then I agree. CYBERVPM shouldn't be replaced. But I'd hate to see CYBERVPM get bogged down with AVA discussions -- to have them separated out is a great idea. This place is as good as any but, again, there needs to be more clarification and up-front information about who is behind this site, what it's for, etc.

Hi all,

I'm new to the *idea* of this site. For others like me, who were never associated with AVM or its resources, a link to the other listserve or instructions for subscribing would be helpful. Thanks!

How can I help?

Although I now work as a language specialist, I still consider myself a professional Volunteer Administrator, manage volunteers and volunteer. As a member of the NVAVA, I support it and my local Volunteer Center. Having said this, I will be very interested in helping explore the development of a new national organization which will meet the needs of local AVAs by providing a national presence and a healthy and inclusive infrastructure that local organizations can model and in which administrators can participate. I have some experience in bringing a defunct organization back to life, so I am willing to help however I can.

I have been a member of AVA for under a year and was able to attend the conference in Jacksonville. We have much to be proud of in our profession; perhaps this large bump in the road will result in a new and stronger organization. I would like to help.

Hello,

I was a member of AVA for several years and was a part of the focus group held in Pittsburgh for CVA sponsored by AVA. Therefore, I have a vested interest in helping this forum to move forward and find a niche for a new organization.

This forum is one step in the right direction to keep the conversations and thoughts focused on the apporpriate method for meeting the future needs of the volunteer community.

I am willing to help in whatever way possible.
