Hazy eye's

My girl's eye's have turned a hazy bluish color, has any had this happen. She act fine, active, great appetite. There hasn't been any discharge with the eye. She is 7yrs old and has always passed her Cerf exam.

Re: Hazy eye's

Has she been optigen tested?

Re: Re: Hazy eye's

She hasn't been Optigen tested but her sire is a tested Optigen normal/clear as is her litterbrother.

Re: Re: Re: Hazy eye's

Could be cataracts starting. That is the right age.
PRA and she would already be having night blindness and maybe not hazy till later in life. Either way, not real good. Get her checked.

Re: Hazy eye's

Is the haziness on the eyes surface, ir within the eye? Surface haziness may be conrneal dystrophy ~ not desireable, but not a death-knell.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Hazy eye's

I know acouple of breeders that their labs started showing signs of PRA at an older age and have never gone totally blind but at 9 years old started going night blind.
I also had a PRA bitch but showed signs at around 4 years old and her eyes were blueish for a couple of years before she went night blind, then totally blind.
I would still consider having her checked for night blindness. Just to be on the safe side take her to your Opto vet.

Re: Re: Hazy eye's

Looks like a bluish haze on the outer surface of the eyes, doesn't seem to be within the eye. I don't see any cloudy spots and there is no discharge.

Re: Re: Re: Hazy eye's

This is something I just read, it's possible. She hasn't acted like it has bothered her yet so may be in the early stages if this is what it is. Basically says there is no treatment right now and if she gets ulcers then there are eye drops or possible surgery.

Endothelial dystrophy affects the function of the endothelial cells. The result is a build-up of fluid in the cornea (corneal edema) which clouds the normally transparent cornea and may decrease vision. Edema may cause the eye to appear blue. Recurring non-healing shallow corneal ulcers occur as well.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Hazy eye's

She should be worse case senerio an Optigen carrier and not affected, as least if it was the type PRA we are Optigen testing for since her sire is a tested Optigen normal/clear.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Hazy eye's

My girl's eye was like that at 12, vet saw no cataracts, but what it was was a tumor in the eye due to glaucoma. Have her checked by a specialist.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Hazy eye's

Any changes in a dogs eyes whether it be sudden or gradual should be addressed ASAP by your Vet or a Veterinary Opthamologist. I was taught that anything out of the norm regarding eyes is considered an emergency. Best of luck with your dog.

Re: Hazy eye's

We had a chihuahua girl whos eyes were hazy blue. She had poor tear production and was put on a special eye drops. I cannot remember what kind of eyedrops though. When she was on the drops, her eyes would clear up.

Re: Re: Hazy eye's

Every dog I've ever owned has had their eyes turn a blue color (when the light hits it right) in their old age. Every vet I've ever been too has never been alarmed nor treated this but said it was part of natural aging. None of my dogs had eye issues or were blind in their late years, so I'm lead to believe it's natural aging progression as well.

If it happened in a young dog I'd be concerned, but not with an aging dog.

Nuclear sclerosis

We often get people that bring an older dog into the clinic complaining of cataract formation in their dogs' eyes. The vast majority of the time, the dog does not have cataracts, but has the much more common condition known as 'nuclear sclerosis.' Nuclear sclerosis is a normal change that occurs in the lens of older dogs. Nuclear sclerosis appears as a slight graying of the lens. It usually occurs in both eyes at the same time and occurs in most dogs over six years of age. The loss of transparency occurs because of compression of the linear fibers in the lens. The condition does not significantly affect the vision of the dog and treatment is not recommended.
