Chill 5

How long will semen generally stay viable inside the bit_h if Chill 5 was used? Insemination was done the day it arrived(overnight).

Re: Chill 5

I've done breedings twice now with Chill 5, hate it, it kills the swimmers. Go with another extender. Please.

Re: Chill 5

I had the absolute best results with Chill 5. I think some stud dogs just are not compatible with all extenders.

Re: Re: Chill 5

and try not to ever use anything other then Chill 5.

Re: Chill 5

Dr Hutch says 2-3 days.
Myra Savant says 12 hours.
This of course is regardless of the brand of extender used.

I know that Chill 5 has been tested while
left in a refrigerator and was still very good for 7-9 days. I would imagine it's possible that some girls are not compatible with it but, I send my males only with Chill 5. Many times it's sent directly to repro specialists and they have always raved about the quality. Who knows for sure?

Re: Re: Chill 5

Chill 5 is not as good as other extenders - period. That is from a fairly scientific perspective. One or two stories does not a better extender make.

Re: Chill 5

I prefer Camelot Farms over Chill 5, though you can't beat the convenience of the Chill 5 - just take it out of the fridge and it's ready to use!

Re: Chill 5

I think I've used Chill 5 for almost two years now. Our conception success rate is very very good as it is with several breeder friends that use Minitube. I don't have a problem with any of the other extenders, in fact I used Camelot for years before this with the same successful results, and Clone before that. Chill 5 is much more convenient as someone said already.
If your semen arrives dead, or you miss you bitch consistently there may be other issues with the semen quality or fertility on your girl, or the collection procedure and exposed temperature could be an issue. Is the person doing the collecting experienced? Are they as careful as they must be? It's so easy to blame the extender.
The original question was how long it lasted in the girl, not what extender is preferred. That was answered by one poster. Are there any vets out there that can comment on the semen life "once in the bitch"?

Re: Re: Chill 5

Yes Lu...exactly. That was my question. How long once inside the bitch and Laura gave an answer. I hope it's what Dr. Hutch felt!

Re: Chill 5

Do they have quality control issues maybe? First time I used it to ship (as stud dog owner), we got 8 puppies. Second time, we missed and frankly, the bit I kept in my fridge looked pretty lethargic when I looked at it the next day (both shipments). Not impressed.

Re: Chill 5

So you are absolutely sure it wasn't the semen? How about the frige being too cold? You CAN kill it you know.
Can you answer the original question?

Re: Chill 5

Am I sure it wasn't the semen? Well, with the same dog, tbe Chill5 worked (8 puppies), though the recipient said the semen could have looked better after about 4 days. Second time shipping with Chill5, with several litters in-between with same stud dog, fresh AIs, semen looked great fresh, as usual, but very lethargic after re-warming. Fridge has temp control and is kept at normal temps - not too cold.

So... makes me wonder why the same stud dog with viable fresh semen would work one time, but not the next with the same extender. Makes me think the Chill5 isn't the same each time!

Re: Chill 5

BTW - did you inseminate too soon, thus the question about how long it will last in the bitch? That question has been guestimated before at 12-48 hours.
