Swollen Penis

I know I got someone's attention with that one.

Anyhow, a dog I sold (about 6 years old, neutered, on seizure medication) has developed an extremely swollen and uncomfortable penis. At least that is what his looks are trying to tell us.

He's on Metacam and Baytril but neither of the vets at the clinic had any idea what it could be.

They did a blood panel (results on Friday), used a catheter for a urine sample, x-ray and I'm not sure what else.

Now I'm looking for ideas from the armchair veterinarians on the list. Does anyone have any experience with something like this? Any ideas what avenues we could take to try to put a name to this?

TIA

Re: Swollen Penis

Don't laugh, but could he have gotten into some viagra by mistake? Now laugh..............

Re: Swollen Penis

Nope, belongs to a nice young family and their youngest child is a few months old. I doubt the little blue pill is in that household.

Re: Swollen Penis

Happened with my Brue, at the age of 10 years. He had a tumor pressing on his prostrate. Cold cloths seemed to make him a little more comfortable- I also used the ice blanket sheets, covered with a receiving blanket (or light towel)- for him to lay on...

Hope it better news for your young man.

Re: Re: Swollen Penis

Could be quite dangerous, especially if it stops or slows urination. Look for blockages due to stones or tumors anywhere in urinary tract from kidneys down.

Re: Swollen Penis

Cathy, do you really mean the penis or do you mean the skin/sheath that covers the penis?
I have a boy that had what looked like a swollen penis but it really was the inside of the skin that holds/covers the penis.
He got that from dragging his stomach over snow. He would then lick his penis and that developed into a really big sore penis.
We solved the problem by squeezing antibiotics right into the sheath that covers the penis and stopped him from licking with a Cone collar.
Hope this will help. Good luck.

Re: Swollen Penis

They say, and vet confirmed, it's really the penis. The snow scenario makes sense since we have more snow this year than we normally do.

I'll talk to them and report back. Thanks for the prostate idea. I didn't think to ask them about that.

Re: Re: Swollen Penis

Might also be worth a shot to put some anesthetic ointment on it, Orajel comes to mind, it works fast, I know this because I had a JRT that got his wee one engorged trying to breed my other JRT and it wouldn't go back down, and it was like that for a while, so I smeared some Orajel on it and it went down in about 5 minutes. It also worked after I neutered him and he was still able to tie and he was crafty about it could even push open slider doors, but my girl couldn't be spayed because of a heart condition so all I had to do was rub some Orajel on it and it would get them unstuck, after a while though all I had to do was walk towards him with the tube, at that point it was learned behavior!! LOL

Re: Swollen Penis

be sure there is not a piece of long hair wrapped around farther up.
A family had this happen last year, somehow a piece of very long human hair had gotten up in the sheath and had wrapped around causing swelling.

"I neutered him and he was still able to tie and he was crafty about it could even push open slider doors,"

Was he pushing the slider door open with his penis??? This just cracked me up. Sorry, LOL!!!
