help! puppy with tiny round sore

I have 1 puppy with a tiny round sore on her stomach. I took her to the vet, and they did skin scrape & another test with a blue light, and did not see any thing. They wanted to know if we had any other puppies with the same problem. I said no, until today.

I gave the puppies their bath, and found a tiny dark stop on her thigh, I wiped it off and a piece of fur came off, and there is a tiny tiny spot.

I suspect puppy fungas or bacterial infection, but from what i read on the internet, that is what happesn in puppy mills, & dogs with skin problems.

This is a re-peat breeding, and nothing like that in the past.

Re: help! puppy with tiny round sore

Possibly strangles?

I had a puppy that had sores on his stomach with strangles.

You'll have to cut and paste this but it covers the basics.

Most information will say it happens on the head and neck but it can be seen on the torso as well.

Re: Re: help! puppy with tiny round sore; canine ring worm

i have been doing some research, and wonder if it is ring worm

does anyone know they symptoms of ring worm

what i did was pull off a crusty scab which was a red raw & round sore underneath

we are going to the vet again tomorrow

Re: Re: help! puppy with tiny round sore

Cathy,

i checked out the link, and she does not have those symptoms

i do appreciate your help

Re: help! puppy with tiny round sore

how old are the puppies?

Re: help! puppy with tiny round sore

How old are they? Why are you bathing them? What are you bathing them with? Are the scabs blood scabs, or are they more of a crusty scab?

Re: Re: Re: help! puppy with tiny round sore; canine ring worm

What is the diameter of the sore and is it flat or raised?

Re: help! puppy with tiny round sore

It is probably just a staph infection. Do you use wood chips and do they pay on them? Give them a wash with Head and Shoulders and keep an eye on them.

Re: Re: help! puppy with tiny round sore

I just had a litter of happy, hearty pups in to the vet and a couple had very small round little bumps on the tum. Nothing crusty, scabby or alarming, just a few bumps. The vet, a repro specialist, immediately told me not to fret that it was just "a little puppy staph" and left alone would go away quickly. I used wood pellets. What is the connection there with wood chips etc? Do they just carry more "live" things?
Hope your pups do well,
Annie

Re: help! puppy with tiny round sore

My puppy's symptoms didn't really match the info on the link either. There was absolutely nothing on the head or neck and all the spots (very few) were on the belly.

If it is ringworm be careful as you and your family can get it as well.

Re: Re: help! puppy with tiny round sore

roundworm intestinal infections can cause little pimples or sores on the stomach. That sounds like what you are describing to me.

Re: help! puppy with tiny round sore

You need to answer some of these questions if you want answers. Have the pups been wormed?

Re: Re: help! puppy with tiny round sore

It is most likely Puppy Dermatitis it normally appears on the abdomen and inner parts of the legs, however if they are due for vaccines you should wait as their immune system is fighting this and you don't want to add that on top of it. The usual treatment is Clavamox. Don't pull the scabs off! At most just use a small amount of antibacterial ointment on them. We had a few puppies that had that last year, and it was a winter litter so no dirt or anything,we just ended keeping the puppies that were flying out a little longer. Best of luck!
