Wanting to learn

Hello Everyone,

I was just wondering if some of you could help me out. I am looking to find a book or some type of reading material that could explan to me what things like, lay back in shoulder, turn of stiffel, Ect.....I hear this being said by other breeders and I have NO Idea what it means. I was told to read "reaching for the stars" and I did. It wasn't what I am looking for. Is there anything I can purchase to help teach me what these terms and others mean? TIA for your help.[ :)]

Re: Wanting to learn

A terrific book to read is "Born to Win". I don't know who wrote it but it is great. A bit intense but it goes over many different breeds and tells how top winners were bred. I LOVED the book..... Hard to find now though. Good luck.

Re: Wanting to learn

If you get a chance, go to a Pat Hastings seminar. You will learn a lot about structure. You can see where her upcoming seminars on her website.

Re: Wanting to learn

Tracy, the Pat Hasting seminar is a good suggestion. I picked up a book at her seminar called Canine Terminology by Harold R. Spira, It's a highly illustrated reference that shows gaits, stance, bites etc. It's very basic but it may be what you're looking for. Not an expensive book, hardcover, about 150 pages.

Re: Wanting to learn

Another good one is K9 Structure and Terminology by Gilbert & Brown. This book goes into more detail.

Re: Wanting to learn

This is online glossary that I have found helpful when I hear a reference I am unsure of:

Hope that helps. :)

Re: Wanting to learn

If you're going to Potomac; Pat Hastings is doing a seminar there. That is one place you can learn, at Potomac. Spend the four days there and talk to people and watch closely. Hey maybe you'll find a good mentor there. :-)

There is the Pat Hastings Puppy Puzzle also. http://www.dogfolk.com/dvd.htm

Re: Wanting to learn

I like "The Puppy Puzzle" also, it's more comprehensive once you attend the seminar, it goes through a lot of information pretty fast.
