mismate shot

Has anyone had experience with this?
Did you have long term problems?
Were you able to breed the bitch again?
Did you breed her on the next heat (assuming no problems)?
I think this is used more in Europe than here in the US so maybe breeders from there can provide some valuable input.
thank you for your information.

Re: mismate shot

I have never personally used this shot. However, I have a good friend (Vizsla breeder) who used it. Without going into all the gory details, the final result was a viable bitch rendered unable to ever have another litter.
I would rather risk an unwanted pregnancy, and placing the puppies versus what I saw, and the grief over losing the ability of this beautiful girl to continue their line.

Re: mismate shot

Champion girl, oops tie, mismate shot, never concieved afterwards. Upon exploratory surgery uterus wall was paper thin. Repro specialist speculated it could have been caused as a result of mismate shot. I have never personally heard of a good outcome.

Re: Re: mismate shot

I used it a long time ago on my lab girl. She had a wonderful first litter before this. I was told by my vet it was safe to use. So we bred her the next heat she lost the puppies about 3 weeks early. We skipped a heat bred her, nothing, bred her again nothing. Spayed and pet home. It might not have been the shot but I will never use it again.

Re: mismate shot

I used it on a bitch MANY years ago. She developed a uterine infection. Thankfully, she responded to antibiotic treatment and had 2 litters for me afterward. Would I use it again? HECK NO!!!!! It's just not worth the risk.

Re: Re: mismate shot

I had an oops tie a few years ago and considered using the shot because the male was not from blood lines I wanted in my kennel (was for sale at the time) but after speaking to many on the subject, vets and breeders, I opted to whelp the litter.
I was told told that the shot could cause my girl many health problems and even possibly kill her

Re: mismate shot

Used it about 20 years ago. Bitch never conceived again. She had had a healthy litter once before using the shot.

I was very "green" at the time.

The other "oops" I had about 15 yrs ago when my bitch escaped and went to hang out with the neighbors mutt for 4 days...I knew better and remembered what the shot had done, so I whelped the litter, 10 of course...LOL! All black, totally looked like labs! Lucky me, had them all adopted by 8 weeks old.

Re: Re: mismate shot

Had one tie from an "oops". Young boy, girl at end of cycle. Nothing came of it. But never thought of giving anything like the mismate shot. Have only heard bad things. Most would say just let her have pups if they are there. What will that hurt compared to the other choice.

Re: Re: Re: mismate shot

Is there a specific chemical or brand name you are talking about?

I had a mutt chew through the chain link one time (20 years ago). Used depo medrol stopped the pregnancy, and she did conceive and have healthy litters after that.

Re: Re: Re: Re: mismate shot

The use of Prostaglandin and Lutalyse are now the preferred method to terminating unplanned canine pregnancy. The protocol is very similar to what is used to treat pyometria and is much safer for the bitch than the old mismate shot...which honestly I thought was not being used anymore.

You begin the process about 4 weeks after ovulation and after you have confirmed pregnancy via ultrasound.

Dogs can conceive with no problems after this treatment. My vet used this process on an oops breeding for us 3 years ago...the bitch has since had two lovely, large litters.

Please talk to a repro vet or have your vet work with one of the colleges. They will be able to tell him/her the appropriate protocol.

Best of luck.

Re: mismate shot

Our vet used the mismate shot on our Corgi who "accidently" mated with a Border Collie. The shot worked but led to raging Pyometria(sp?) and an emergency spay. In retrospect, we should have enjoyed the Borgi pups.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: mismate shot

I dunno but I think I might have an issue with aborting pups four weeks into pregnancy...anyone else?
Just think it would make me feel bad like they're already puppies at that point or something.
Would have no issues doing it if it were much sooner after conception however...

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: mismate shot

They are starting to form and are puppies by that time. and she would know she was preg. I could never do that.

Re: Re: mismate shot

Used it a very long time ago, bitch had Pyo afterward. NEVER do that again.

Re: mismate shot

I assume Mismate is a trademark name, but many years ago my vet gave some type of hormone shot to my 15 mos. old bitch who had an unwanted breeding with her brother. She did not get pregnant and had 2 litters afterward. Having heard many bad outcomes since, I would never use it again. But my only experience was fine.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: mismate shot

Okay..first of all, I am sorry you are so squeamish..if you make a decision to abort a litter than you should do so in a manner that is healthiest for the bitch not what you can morally accept. Otherwise...let her have the litter.

The OP asked for options...I am saying there is a safe alternative to this mismate shot and that they need to talk to repro specialists not a bunch of nameless forum members.

And no, I believe you have to wait 3-4 wks because of implantation.

If this person wants to discontinue a pregnancy of their bitch then this is a safer alternative to the Mismate shot.

Re: Re: mismate shot

I had a possible mismating recently and conferred with my repro vet. Her advice was to let the bitch have the puppies. As it turned out, she did not conceive, so I was off the hook, but if she had I would have followed the vet's advice.
