my 6 yr old spayed choc girl may have bladder infection

I have a 6 yr old chocolate spayed girl at home .She about a month ago began having red spotting in her urine when she went out side . In fact she pottied on my linoeum one day and I saw the spotting then too.
We had her put on cephlexin 500 mg x 2 a day for 2 wks and she stopped the spotting and symptoms and was normal a gain.
We had a foot of snow last nite drop on us in Indiana and of course I shoveled paths out side for the house girls to be able to go out and do their business easier .
Well I saw spotting in some ones urine so I immediatly thought oh my gosh its the mommy to be girl thats due on monday .
So I began today escorting one girl at a time out in the yard and watched for a fresh potty in the snow. Well thankfully its not the new mommy to be . But it is my spayed 6 yr old again. Its bright red blood drops in the urine .Of course I attempted to call my regualr vet today and they are closed due to the bad snow we had .I am going to presume tomorrow Ill try to catch some pee in a dish and take some to him to do a bacteria test on it .
Have any of you had this happen on your older spayed girls ?She eats salmon proplan .

Its very possible that she has another urine infection - did you just recently spay her? It could be used from the catheter used during spaying

Re: my 6 yr old spayed choc girl may have bladder infection

I would call the vet and ask his opinion. I have had lots of UTI's and I don't recall them getting to the bright red drop stage.

I do remember that on the forum last year there was discussion about uterine tissue left after a spay that caused problems.

Re: Re: my 6 yr old spayed choc girl may have bladder infection

When my girl was growing up she had an inverted vulva-when she would get a UTI she would get bright red blood droplets as well. She was first treated with a course of anti-biotics. The second time it started (shotly after the first) my vet suggested increasing her cranberry caps and giving her all natural, no sugar added cranberry juice. I used that each time she would start and that cleared it up. My vet stated she did not like to keep putting a young dog on anti-biotics. Try your girl with some cranberry caps/juice until you can get to your vet-it won't hurt her. For me the blood was present each time-today at two she is fine.

Well shes actually just turned 7 yr old this january on the 14th so technically shes 7 yrs old. We had her spayed around 2 years ago so its not something to do with that part in the vaginal area.
Im guessing its the bladder area or maybe a kidney stone thats causing the bleeding .I was going to take a urine sample in tomorrow if we can travel to the vet and have it looked at .
It is a shame that shes having to go thru this as shes not had issues before .Now this is the second occurance.

I can try cranberry juice . I give it to my husband on occasion .
I agree about the antibiotics on a dog .Using it eccessivly is definitly not healthy / I would consider using colodial silver even as it has properties for solving health issues also .I am going to write my freind in california as she is the holistic person and see what her thoughts are also . I have used her colodial silver for ear infections on a dog, or for a hot spot, and if the dog has a small cut with a infection brewing I will put this on the cut and also give it orally daily and it heals up nicely.

I've had bladder infections and it was almost pure blood one time and it happened before I even knew I had a problem brewing.

Re: my 6 yr old spayed choc girl may have bladder infection

I would not use colloidal silver

Re: Re: my 6 yr old spayed choc girl may have bladder infection

A urologist (for humans) I know recommends mass quantities of cranberry juice and cran capsules for urinary tract infections. Apparently something in the cranberries makes the lining of the bladder 'slickery' so the bacteria is eliminated when urinating.

Re: my 6 yr old spayed choc girl may have bladder infection

If this is a recurring problem it is very helpful to test urine PH at home and if elevated dbl up on crancaps for a week or so and recheck. This way you catch an infection in the very early stages before you see any outward signs.

I get strips from McAllister Bicknell 800-468-6226 catalog #1.09588 EMD ColorPHast PH 5-10

Normal range for a dog is 5.5 - 7

Also it is best to collect your urine, for testing at home or the vet, first thing in the a.m. before any food or water and in mid stream.

Good luck with your girl and here's hoping you can get rid of this infection and not have any more issues.

patty
this is the second time this female had a infection where we saw blood . About a month prior she did this and we put her on cephlexin 500 mg x 2 a day . Seemed to clear up and nothing .
Till now. This time we took pee in this morning and the vet wants to try a different antibiotic . See if this stops the problem . I was going to go and purchase the cranberry pills. what strenght might some of you recommend and how often and if with the meal ?
