Worm or fecals?

Just wondering if most routinely worm their gang or do fecal testing on some?

Re: Worm or fecals?

We always worm pups to prevent a problem with children being exposed to roundworms per World Health Org. recommendations, even if there is a negative fecal. Rarely worm adults, other than heartworm pills. Occasionally use liquid Safe-Guard on adults (liquid for goats, but easier to mix into wet food than the granules for dogs). This is in northern NJ. In south or other milder climates, I might routinely worm, given infection is more likely year round due to warmer winters.

Re: Worm or fecals?

Always - 2,4,6,and 8weeks

Re: Worm or fecals?

puppies always- pyrantel pamoate (Strongid- T, Nemex) -3, 5, 7 wks.
Adults- fecal sample twice yearly on "pooled sampled"
All dogs treated once yearly with fenbendazole (Panacur) for 3 days in a row
My logic is that most of the dogs have been with the general toilet pool at dog events or dog walks- fendbendazole will get the whipworms (pyrantel will not)

I don't breed enough to have issues with coccidia (Albon, Corid treatments).
Most of the dogs are not exposed to Giardiasis, however we have been know to use metronidazole (Flagyl) for dogs with chronic diarrhea, as Giardia is often times hard to detect on fecal direct smears and fecal floats. There is a snap test for giardia now, but I personally have not used it.
