Degenerative Myelopathy?

Has anyone had any experience with a Labrador having Degenerative Myelopathy? Not CNM. Is it always a late (6+ years of age) onset? Does it ever occur unilaterally before affecting both hind limbs? Does it ever affect vision?

My old girl had it. She hobbled around but never stopped. She even enjoyed her evening butt tuck/dance but instead of wide swooping circles she did joyous canter pirouettes. LOL

She had abdominal surgery shortly after being diagnosed so I think the "tummy tuck" actually helped to tighten the skin between her back legs and allowed her to function longer.

The DM didn't stop her - her organs did. :-(

She was only on joint supplements. I didn't need NSAIDs or pain medication.

Maybe contact some Cheasapeake Bay retriever clubs or breeders as it is in that breed and certain lines.
That may help you to understand it better.
