Pain Medication

Can anyone share with me what they are using for pain on their older, arthritic Labs? Thank you.

Re: Pain Medication

Arthritis:

It is important to help the less active dog to maintain muscle mass by feeding a high quality dog food with enough quality protein at about 26% or higher. Protein builds muscle in dogs just like it does in humans. Muscle helps support joints, ligaments, tendons and bone.

Some natural supplements for pain:

Vitamin C: high doses (to bowel tolerance) Vit C makes the adrenal gland produce natural steroids which helps reduce inflammation. I have used as much as 6000-8000mg daily.

DLPA- DL Phenylalanine (all natural) - makes the body produce natural endorphins - the bodies own pain killers. Some drugs can not be combined with this product- such as MAO inhibitors and if certain other health conditions exist. I had good results with this.

Glucosamine Hydrochloride and Chondroitin Sulfate: for joint support. It is now recommended to start on this prior to seeing symptoms - as a preventative by some vets. A G/C supplement without the Hydro and Sulfate has been said to be less effective.

EPA/DHA: (eicosapentaenoic acid/docosahexaenoic acid) Preferably (180mg/120mg) fish “body” (not liver) oil. This should be given with a vitamin E supplement if not already included in the product (same for humans). You can give as much as 1000mg/10 lbs of body weight.

“I give him 2 tablets a day. I started 2-2X a day then backed off.
My vet even takes this himself and his back problems have improved."

Here is some info on this:
Seven Forests Liquidambar 15 is a Chinese herbal remedy to invigorate meridians and vessels, relieve inflammation. Sample Indications for use include back pain, disc problems (inflammation, extrusion), bone hyperplasia, arthralgia affecting hips and/or spine, sciatica. 100 tablets.Ingredients: Liquidambar, Pyrola, Geranium, Cibotium, Pterospermum, Photinia, Kadsura, Morus twig, Loranthus, Chuan-shan-long, Rehmannia, Myrrh, Carthamus, Persica, Achyranthes

And this:

“Apple Cider Vinegar is proving most beneficial to people or animals with arthritis because it breaks down calcium deposits in the joints while remineralizing the bones. It has proven to be equally beneficial to dogs with hip dysplasia.”

Often it is a combination of things that do the trick.

Good luck. Hope you find what works for your senior.

Is this anecdotal or do you have a link to a scientific study for this? I took ACV myself and gave it to my dogs daily for 4 months. I didn't notice a difference or change in any of us. My vet poo-pooed using it.

Do not use Lubrisyn with vitamin C. Lubrisyn contains sodium benzoate, aka E211, a preservative and can form a known carcinogen benzene when mixed with vitamin C.

This has been discussed on other boards. According to Lubrysin this is not true. Call the company and speak with them first or use Trixsyn in lieu.

May not be scientific but I am posting natural suggestions.

I have used ACV for dry flakey skin and warding off yeast in ears with success.

A lot of vets poo poo it because they don't believe in holistic treatment.

Some say its best to use organic ACV with the "mother" in it. Try a health food store.

Re: Pain Medication

No I wasn't looking for testimonies or recommendations for apple cider vinegar I would like proof that it works because I have the starting of arthritis. I was using Bragg raw unfiltered with the mother in it but I gave up because it did nothing for me or my dogs. Maybe I have to take it longer then 4 months? I stopped taking it because my teeth were getting sensitive. My vet (but not my physician) is holistically minded and she always mentions alternative methods to try like fish oil but she doesn't believe in ACV for anything except to clean ears if needed. How does it help hip dysplasia?

BTW, she says not to give vitamin E daily, only a small amount no more than 200 IU of natural E 2 times a week. Most dog foods have enough and she said there is a recent study that shows vitamin E does not prevent cancer in humans at all and excess amounts could actually cause cancer. Google "vitamin E causes cancer".

Lubrisyn DOES have sodium benzoate in it according to the product information. I think I'll pass on this one.

Active Ingredients: Hyaluronic Acid (Sodium)......150 mg

Inactive Ingredients: Water, citric acid, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, sodium chloride, xanthan gum.

Re: Pain Medication

Than do some research on your own.

As I said, holistic is tough to find scientific results.

I am only giving suggestions. You have to try different things.

Just like not every dog does well on a certain dog food, they won't "all" do well on certain supplements or meds.

Same goes for humans.

Live and learn. Try, add more, or eliminate.

Its your choice what you try and what results you see or don't.

Re: Pain Medication

there are several different types of "pain" medications.
I would recommend consulting with your veterinarian to see if you need an anti-inflammatory, joint supplement etc.

different drugs for different issues

Re: Pain Medication

I agree to check with your vet but not all know or agree with holistic approach.

So if you want to go the holistic route consider a holistic vet........

Thats a no brainer.

x-rays can also definitively diagnose arthritis. So you may want to do that first,
