what worm?

This is so gross but I found a worm in the stool today while picking up the yard.

I have never see one like this. It was about twice as long as a grain of rice and very faint pink color almost white. It had tapered ends and you could see lines across the body like segments but it was not segmented. It reminded me of an inchworm but smaller. It even had little tiny barbs every so often like feet. Totally gross.......it turns my stomache.
Anyone seen this before?

Re: what worm?

Is that hookworm?

Re: what worm?

No I don't think so because it is no longer than two grains of rice. Straight in form with lines across the body.

Re: what worm?

Google canine parasites, and hit Images. You will see many disgusting photos. See if you can find your worm.

Re: what worm?

sounds like Tapes to me

Re: what worm?

Me too... and don't panic if it is and you're thinking you have fleas because there's rodent type tape too. I live in the country and learned this eons ago. Tape segments are flat if you really look at them, not skinny/long. If you catch it fresh, it'll be moving too.

Re: what worm?

This isn't flat. Round like rice.

Take a look at this one. I know you say your worm is not flat, but I can't think of another worm that is so short.

Re: what worm?

Hi.. it's too short not to be anything else? It's not the worm you are seeing but the egg segment. And when a dog or cat(never seen it on a dog but have on outdoor cats) is quite infested, you'll even see these 'rice pieces' stuck to their anus hairs. They die quickly once exposed on the outside.

You can take that dead piece into your vet and h/she will know if it's a tape and which kind. Or whatever it is.....

If that grosses you out, try this.....

Women used to buy tape worm eggs in gelatin capsules at the drug store and swallow them. They believed that the tape worm would help keep them slim.

Anyone remember those days? My grandmother told me about her and her sister doing it in the late 1920 & dirty 30's.

Re: If that grosses you out, try this.....

Am not a breeder, never will be but I do have labs and belong to a lab chat forum. I hesitated to respond on a breeders site (I read this site for information purposes)but a similar situation happened with one of our members. And, to me most important, this concerns the health of your dog, so jumping in. Here is the link to the thread regarding the worm. The third post down has links to pictures. Further posts, I believe, identify the worm.

Hope this helps.
Please excuse my barging in.

Re: If that grosses you out, try this.....

Just in case those of us in the frozen tundra might be missing the obvious - are the temps above freezing where you live? Your description sounds very much like some sort of fly larvae.

Re: what worm?

Maybe it's "Lung Worm".
