FOR ALL THE SPELLING POLICE!

This is going to be very hard for me to due but feel as though I have
to due it.

I have been very hurt by the "Spelling Post" that has been so popular
her for the last few days!

I thought I could let it go by without getting upset about it but it has
continued to bother me for the last two days.

You see, I am the person that everyone is talking about because
I can't spell, due punctuation's or grammar well due to my learning
disability's.

My hole life I have struggled with ADHD along with a couple of other
learning disability's.
However just because I can't spell does not make me a stupid person.
There are other areas in my life that I do things very well.

I have been very fortunate in my life, I have a nice home to live in, a
wonderful family, my dogs and most important GOD.

My mother and father both taught me morals and values and to respect
and value every person in your life and to try to except people for who they
are and to never down or disrespect other people and always try to be
kind to people no matter what.

As far as the post that stated that they were concerned about the
people that could not spell being the future of or breed!

I have been breeding Labradors for about 16 years and have seemed
to manage with my breeding program even though I can't spell!

There is no one more concerned about the future of this breed than
I !!!!!! I live and breath Labradors.

Some of you may not know me but my hope is that you will take the
time to get to know me before you judge me. I am a little shy some
times but when I get to know you I can't shut up as I love to talk about
Labradors.

I have been very fortunate and have met some wonderful people
her in the Labrador community and my only hope is that I will continue
to even meet more.

I would like to say thank you to all of my friends out there that
can over look my disability and see me as a person. I value each
and every one of you in my life.

Sorry this is so long.
Rebecca

Re: FOR ALL THE SPELLING POLICE!

I personally met you Rebecca and yes, you are a nice person. I'm sincerely soooo sorry that someone would post something about spelling that you took to heart. Continue with your breeding program, and let the numbskulls, is that SPELLED correctly Nancy or am I going to go on failbook too, continue. You won't stop them.
Hugs honey!

Re: FOR ALL THE SPELLING POLICE!

My husband graduated from a very good private university with honors and can't spell worth a hoot. He always has me go through his correspondence to check for errors. He's been very successful in his careers earning a six figure income. He can calculated numbers in his head faster than I can do them with a calculator. Spelling just isn't his thing. You've done well for yourself too Rebecca.

Re: FOR ALL THE SPELLING POLICE!

It was hurtful and uncalled for! It made me sick, I know Becky and she would do anything for anyone, I'm ashamed to call this a Labrador forum, none of you have correct temperaments ! I hope you are all spay and neutered, I swear I think you would eat your own young!

Re: FOR ALL THE SPELLING POLICE!

AMEN!!!! BLESS u Rebecca, I too suffer from AADD and spell horribly........had older sibs that competed in state spelling bees and aced english/grammer.........i've spent my life being ashamed and made fun of.......for my slightly off center behavior :-) now ....I no longer give a rats a@# what folks think and am amused that sometimes ppl have so much time to pick apart others?

we've never met...........BUT I am sending u a big hug!!!

Re: FOR ALL THE SPELLING POLICE!

Rebecca, I don't think the thread was directed at any Lab breeder in particular, although several people did get carried away with how serious spelling and grammatical errors are and how they reflect on one's ability to breed dogs. I found your post quite articulate and easy to comprehend, which is really the important thing.

Nancy saw something funny on another site and wanted to share the humor. To my mind, the reason the posting was funny wasn't the original mistake, but 1. How a responder turned it into a clever pick-up line (board and chalk) 2. Then the original poster impolitely corrected his posting (which was a correct play on the original incorrect spelling) with another incorrect spelling. I'm sure you would never try to correct anyone else's spelling mistake in the first place, much less do so without making sure you were correct. And, since you breed Labradors, I'm sure you have never gone into a chat room complaining of boredom!

BTW, I decided to find out when the first dictionary was published. Boy was I wrong! There were dictionaries done on clay tablets in Assyria in the 5th century BC, as well as Sanskrit, Hebrew and Chinese dictionaries several centuries later. The first English dictionary in 1604 didn't get a lot of respect. Samuel Johnson's (1755) was more widely accepted. Webster's 1806 dictionary was just the first to use the standard American spellings such as "color" instead of "colour". So, fellow spelling strugglers, now you know whom to blame!

Re: FOR ALL THE SPELLING POLICE!

I have a PhD and my spelling/typing sux!
Rebecca - don't sweat the small stuff. God blessed all with talents, looks and abilities.

Remember, our loved ones & pets
LOVE US A WHOLE BUNCH whether or not we can type and spell perfectly.

Hugs,

Re: FOR ALL THE SPELLING POLICE!

Rebecca, my post was not meant to be mean to you or anyone else. I'm sorry if it was interpreted that way. I thought the chalk/board joke was funny. It made me laugh! It would have made me laugh even if it was spelled "bored". I also wanted to encourage people to use spell checking more often so that nobody's post here gets posted on some site like failbooking. Spell check programs are a great help and are easy enough to use.

I didn't post anonymously, but most of the people responding did. Interesting.

So Rebecca, I apologize to you for posting something that hurt you. It was never my intent.

Re: FOR ALL THE SPELLING POLICE!

Thank you for your post and I must say this has been a problem on this forum many times. I just ignored the post, since I can't always spell correct either and my grammer is horrible. That was always a problem for me and it seems it always will be. Hang in there, don't take it to heart, if it wasn't spelling they were picking on, then it would be something else, just human nature. You have gorgeous dogs and you are a good, person. Like I always say, if it doesn't interfere with your breeding program, then it isn't important

Spelling? LOL, how's your inverted issue going?

Re: FOR ALL THE SPELLING POLICE!

I read the first post and knew it was just to be funny and was amazed at how many responses there, when I came back on the forum

Being a person that doesn't like BS, I didn't bother to read the replies.

I've known Nancy, for quite a while, and know she wouldn't hurt a flea,(well, maybe a flea)and it is pathetic how people can misinterpret a statement and let it get out of control, and best of all, under a alias name.

Rebeca, take it with a grain of salt.

Re: FOR ALL THE SPELLING POLICE!

Rebecca, I honestly have not read the posts on that subject other than the first one. Sounds like I shouldn't bother. What I can tell you though after reading this forum for quite a few years is that there are some really mean people in our breed, and MEAN PEOPLE SUCK in my opinion. There is no excuse to belittle people that are different from you or less fortunate for what ever reason. There is no excuse for making fun of people, period! A little kindness in life goes a long way. Now what you have to do dear is pretend you are a duck and just let it roll off your back knowing you are a better person than these nasty people are. We have to develope a thick skin even when it does hurt. Go out and hug your dogs and stop reading this list for a while.

Re: FOR ALL THE SPELLING POLICE!

Becky,

If someone has nothing better to do than "police check" your spelling, they need to get a life.
You're a very nice person and whether you have spelling difficulties or not, has nothing to do with your character.
Personally, I did not read the reply that the other person wrote about your spelling and don't plan to. Don't let this stop you posting on the forum....we love to hear what you have to say.

Re: FOR ALL THE SPELLING POLICE!

Rebecca, This is why I sometimes wish spelling was not standardized. Before the 1800's no one worried about correct spelling.

By the way, it was not only Thomas Edison who couldn't spell well (and where would we be without his inventions!) Heart bypass surgery was designed by a dyslexic (dylexics have greater trouble with spelling than with reading), in fact many common surgeries were designed and developed by dyslexics. Also, many famous authors are/were dyslexic.

So, that puts poor spellers in a group of especially creative and inventive people. Everyone I have met with "learning disabilities" has also had special "Abilities" and I am sure you are no exception!

Re: FOR ALL THE SPELLING POLICE!

Rebecca, don't give these people what they are looking for. I've been blessed by a natural ability to spell things correctly, and to write well. That's my blessing. But when it comes to physics or chemistry or some forms of math - forget it! We are all people with strengths and weaknesses. People here come from basically four "places". Those who just lurk and may rarely post; those who post and try to be helpful (and sometimes even use their real names); those who post anonymously because they don't want to be attacked; and those who post anonymously because they are spineless. That last group would not DARE say to someone's face what they do here anon. Write them off - they don't deserve you. As a wise man once told me, "you can't put into someone what Mama left out."

Re: FOR ALL THE SPELLING POLICE!

Dear Rebecca,
Please do not worry about your spelling!! No one could possibly be confused about your sentiments. In fact, you could write a whole paragraph with only the first and last letter of every word right and most of us would decipher it no problem. The human brain has an amazing way of disregarding the rules of grammar and spelling. My sister, who has a Master's degree in English, spells just like you. You just keep going girl!

Re: FOR ALL THE SPELLING POLICE!

Oh for crying out loud, my son has dyslexia and learned to spell correctly anyway. Then along came spell check and grammar check on the computer, and he didn't even have to work so hard to get it right.

Come on, folks, spelling is not rock science these days. Just takes a little effort. And if you want to continue without correction, then you oil up your skin to let "it" roll off. That's OK too. None of this is as difficult or as important as you are making it.

This whole thing started as a humorous post. What happened to humor anyway?

Re: FOR ALL THE SPELLING POLICE!

Becky

I'm really sorry you were hurt. I've e mailed you directly, hope you get it.

Re: FOR ALL THE SPELLING POLICE!

"Come on, folks, spelling is not rock science these days. Just takes a little effort."

So wrong, my brilliant dyslexic son and I have put in years and years and years of special programs and EFFORT and his spelling is still poor, he relies on spell check. I always won spelling bees and never understood the difficulties and frustrations of others until now. My son scores very high on standardized tests, but free spelling without spell check is disasterous. That's why the MD who "invented" bypass surgery took his medical exam in a state where the test was all multiple choice, he couldn't pass the exam in his home state because of spelling on handwritten essay questions. Yet how many lives did he save with the advent of bypass surgery??

I do agree, however, that the original post was for humor's sake, and probably not directed towards any one person.

Re: FOR ALL THE SPELLING POLICE!

Since when did spell check tell which homonym to use? Is it there, their, they're? Does spell check tell you when to spell which or witch?

Spelling is complex, and dyslexia is an overused term which can only be officially diagnosed by an MD is also a psychiatrist, not just a resourse room teacher or reading specialist. Many people say their children have dyslexia and can spell but the child has never been diagnosed by a person who is legally recognized to diagnose dyslexia.

Re: FOR ALL THE SPELLING POLICE!

I said that spelling correctly is not difficult "these days" because every word processing program has spell check and often some form of grammar check. You can even get programs that specifically address the problems common to each type of dyslexia.

Yes, there have been many people in history who achieved great things even though no treatment was available for their dyslexia, but "these days" such suffering through adversity really isn't necessary--one of the great values of computers.

Is that a typo, spelling error or are you telling us that spelling isn't geology?
I for one, never take notice of spelling errors. I can read right past them and still understand what the poster is trying to convey and I'm not getting paid to edit. I do always find humor in posts that are meant to chide someone about spelling or grammar that are not exactly error free
and no...I didn't use spell check on this post so any typos, spelling or errors in grammar are what they are, get out the red pencil

Re: FOR ALL THE SPELLING POLICE!

You think English is easy???
Read to the end . . a new twist

1) The bandage was wound around the wound.

2) The farm was used to produce produce.

3) The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.

4) We must polish the Polish furniture.

5) He could lead if he would get the lead out.

6) The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.

7) Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present

8) A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum.

9) When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.

10) I did not object to the object.

11) The insurance was invalid for the invalid.

12) There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row...

13) They were too close to the door to close it.

14) The buck does funny things when the does are present.

15) A seamstress and a sewer fell down into a sewer line.

16) To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow.

17) The wind was too strong to wind the sail.

18) Upon seeing the tear in the painting I shed a tear.

19) I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.

20) How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend?

Let's face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France . Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.
******************
You lovers of the English language might enjoy this .

There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is 'UP'

It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP ? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP ? Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write < U>UP a report ?

We call UP our friends. And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver; we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car. At other times the little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses.. To be dressed is one thing, but to be dressed UP is special.

And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night.

We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP. To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4th of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of th e many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more . When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP .. When the sun comes out we say it is clearingUP ...

When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP.

When it doesn't rain for awhile, things dry UP.

One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP , for now my time is UP , so........it is time to shut UP !

Oh . . . one more thing:

What is the first thing you do in the morning & the last thing you do at night?
U-P

Languages are wonderful tools and, like so many of you, I love playing with them. But they are first and foremost geared for communication and, as demonstrated, reach their goal without the fine tuning of precision tools. Whereas words wielded with wisdom may work wonders, correct spelling is not necessarily a sign of education and many top scientists stumble in this area.

Re: FOR ALL THE SPELLING POLICE!

I love to read that scamble paragraph. Just love it. So easy to read. These perfect people if they are always looking to put down and look for misspelled words or bad grammer, then they are not really hearing what someone is trying to tell them. Hope they don't miss out on a real connecting with someone because of it. I don't care how you spell if you want to take your time and talk to me or send me a note do it. I am no one to judge. Of course, neither are the spelling police we have on here. Sorry Rebecca, you are very well thought of with us.

My spell check is in French and Dell says nothing I can do about it. Unfortunately, my French went out the window with my memory.

Re: FOR ALL THE SPELLING POLICE!

Mrs. Cook I do not know you but I just wanted you to know there are lots of us out there who can not spell myself included and I have been quite sucessful and have a BS in Health Care Administration and have managed to run a Long-Term care facility all while learing about labs and I live in the south which I have heard is supposed to make me stupid as well, not to mention I did all this with ADHD and graduated with a 4.0. Go figure I guess this country girl "got her some learning" LOL It is true all of us do need to use spell check more myself included I can think of several e-mails I have sent lately and then realized I mispelled something after sending which I am sure made me look dumb.
