Male sterility

3yr old, had lyme as a 1 yr old. Had semen checked today after several misses and one live litter.
Probabley 95 % dead.....the ICSB girl said that she has seen it in dogs that have lyme and that she has seen them not recover and get worse.85 degrees today, in case it matters.
I will be pulling blood tomorrow....checking CBC, erlich, lyme , anaplas etc what else should I check for?
Any other suggestions, anyone had a lyme dog be steril? Any help appreciated

Re: Male sterility

Yes. Happened to me. Three weeks of doxycycline, and he was back 100% . Don't panic just yet.

Re: Male sterility

Two months of Baytril, collection on Tues, will let you know.

Re: Male sterility

Two courses of doxy, still no swimmers.

Re: Male sterility

I'm hearing of more & more unexplained sterility or lowered sperm counts in stud-dogs but not all are attributed to lyme disease. Lyme *can be* responsible for alot more than some of us are aware of.

I wouldn't be shocked if many cases are due to lyme but absolutely not all. Some are unexplained with nothing ever found to be the cause. Bank your boys as early as you can if they are bettering the breed just in case something happens. It can hit at any time.

Good luck to you & your 3yr old boy.

Don't panic but get him on Doxy ASAP. Mine stayed sterile but vet did not treat with first sign of infertility. We did evetually do Doxy and hormone shots along with fish oil, vitamin C, etc.

Also have heard to feed the highest protein food possible as soon as possible. Sure hope you have better success than we had. After our episode I researched and found the sooner you treat infertility, the better the outcome. Also, some people have told me great success stories with holistic vets -but again the sooner the treatment the better the outcome. All the best!

Re: Male sterility

Well his 4dx snap was neg, even though he had strong pos last year (?)
My vet said she had not heard of Lyme correlation to sterility, then when she came back in the room said I guess there is a rumor of it, but not proven.
Going to repro specialist on Thursday.
I had him collected at the show after judging, it was a hot 85 degrees, could it just have been that???

Re: Male sterility

Was there a teaser who was in season, or just a scented swab?

Does that make a difference with a zero sperm count? I don't think it should. I guess you're curious?

Re: Male sterility

No teaser, no scent. There WAS lots of sperm , just mostly dead

Re: Male sterility

Unless he is used to being collected a LOT, as some males are, I would not count this evaluation as a need for any treatment yet, but as a need for a better test. I would review his history for use of steroids, including those used for skin or ear problems, and I would repeat a test when a teaser IN SEASON can be provided. I have known experienced small-breed males who strongly prefer a natural breeding to withhold if not aroused, even with a teaser. Yes, there was ejaculate, but everything in it was dead. The repro vet pronounced the old guy totally sterile. Stud owner, who had a litter on the ground by him, snorted, and went on to breed him naturally. With one of my own, used before he was neutered, I had an experience similar to yours: collected at the vet's, and everything was dead. Next try was NOT at a vet's office, and we provided a teaser at the peak of season--wow, what a difference! The temps and stress for your boy may not have helped the situation. The old breeder's adage was to breed at the stud dog's home, where he is more comfortable. I have been able to use a small bitch in season to adequately entice the Lab male on lead for a collection, at a friend's home. Granted, we held her in front of his nose, and at first he was nervous as to why this stranger was grabbing him in a vulnerable spot. Then he relaxed and got into the swing of things! I hope that your boy is okay. Try getting closer to nature for your next test, for increased libido, as advised in Merck's manual, etc.

Re: Male sterility

Just back from repro vet....definately abnormal and dead sperm w 2% normal and alive. Vet said this type of deformity is after developement in the testes.Which might be good news, it means we might be able to save them.Vet said the deformities are happening in the epididimis (sp) and could be from bacteria. Semen culture sent off to check for aerobic Mycoplasma and some other plasma. So he is not written off yet, please keep your fingers crossed for me that what ever it is it is treatable.

Fingers & paws crossed. Please advise when you know more. I hope you have good news.

I forgot to ask a question. Did your repro mention a possible biopsy of the epididymis?
