Topical hormone replacement creams affect pets

Apparently, the cream an owner may rub on her arms or hands can cause swollen vulvas, etc. in their dogs, even spayed ones. Pets contact the skin or lick off the cream. I have to wonder about more serious effects. Makes sense to me, just as we should wear gloves when applying even Panalog or other steroid-containing ointment especially when pregnant or nursing.
