I have had it 3 times - three different bitches. (Over the past 11 years). I was told years ago that it comes down through the bitch line, but most recently that it is a recessive - so it comes from both.

*so it comes from both.*
Was it a geneticist or vet specialist that told you this? I won't repeat what another breeder tells me she thinks it is unless I know it's been in research. I might discuss it with breeder friends but not make my own decision, this is how it's transmitted.
Do you mind letting us know where you got this information? The OP was looking for research about ectopic ureters.
My first registered labrador (20+ yrs ago) had what was thought to be recurrent cystitis as a puppy but it continued to be a concern as she approached 1 year--leaky bum when she lay asleep. The breeder used the same stud dog on another litter and found the whole litter had wet bottoms when the momma was taken away from them as she had eclampsia. On investigation, it was found that they all had unilateral and bilateral ectopic ureters. My girl was x rayed and found to have the same. Further tests showed the sire to have this as well. It is more difficult to notice in males apparently. Needless to say, the vet became very experienced at the surgery to correct.
My female lived to be 15 years old and was well maintained on one Stilbesterol per week.
Sire was Ridgsons Camera Ready bred to Redsky's ?.if that helps.
I have heard, that it has been produced a few times with the sire that I used, but that is just hearsay.
I knew at 1 week there was an issue. the puppy is living with a good friend and has been since she was 10 weeks old. Lazer surgery was able to fix the issue at 7 months old thank goodness as her EU attached in the bladder as it should, but it grew long, exited the bladder and attached in the vaginal canal.
I've had it twice in one of my lines. I received this back from a recent inquiry:
I'm glad to hear you're concerned about ectopic ureters in Labradors. The breed is over-represented in the disease and it is very likely it is hereditary. However, as with all the breeds, mode of inheritance is uncertain. I'm unaware of any specific studies of Labradors right now. From the standpoint of a breeder, recognition that a problem exists and a willingness to do something about it is essential.
We are currently working on identifying the gene in the Entles and that may help the situation in the Labs.
Best of luck.

Had 2 pups, one from another breeder, and one bred here. Both related to the same dog. One was sired by him and the other he was a grandfather. The litter I bred was repeated 1x and out of a total of 19 puppies, only one had ectopic ureter. She also had a deformity of one kidney.
