Maybe the Labs the Judge will pick will be better examples of the Standard! Maybe we will not have winners that have no reach or drive, maybe we will have winners that have a level top line and do not look like they are sway backed, maybe they will have
a correct coat, not slick not open and overdone.
I love my fellow Lab breeders but they all have their own vision of a correct Lab they look at them in their kennels everyday! You can look at the Judge and know who will enter and know what will ribbon.
I have talked to other big Breeders and they state they will not be going to this Specialty or that Specialty because that Breeder judge does not like their "type" of dog. Go figure. Look at the spot light dogs this month, do they all look the same? No flames please, just a thought, give the Club a break.
If you were there why not post who the winners were and spare the drama, I am guessing you did not. We all like to win, just because our dogs did not is not an indication the Judge was am Idiot, even though that statement always makes us feel better about not winning. LOL As I stated earlier, no fight here just an opinion and a thought. I am sure the breeder that won thinks their dog should have. Just saying give the Club a break for the Judge selection. Some times an all arounder will attract a bigger entry and with shows loosing money sometimes they have to try something!
Not saying that an all breed judge can't recognize a good labrador. There are quite a few all breed judges that I would show to in an instant. All I'm saying is that my preference at a labrador specialty is a labrador breeder judge.
I am NOT a fan of breeder judges. I prefer a knowledgeable all-breed judge. I am ecstatic not to have a breeder judge at Westminster for the 3rd year in a row. Having said that, I don't think she was the best choice.
This is all I know
Special Occasion labradors won wd/bow/bob to finish "cash" Ch Special Occasion Ring of Fire who is a son of Ch Janlons Light My Fire x Special Occasion Ring of Life
Rwd was Tabathas Caffu Queijiero who is Dickendall Bucky X Ch tabathas Gala
Sorry my post was misunderstood. Nothing against the judge, but the post sounded like the person assumed that breeder judges put up overweight, substantial dogs or dogs with an open coat and that all all-breed judges put up what you think is 'correct', in shape dog with a proper coat.

JMO...... I want to know where in the heck do you find those??? VERY FEW all- breed judges that I would EVER think of giving my entrys to.

I watched with pleasure a long time all-breed judge, Carl Anderson, put up some very lovely dogs yesterday. The WB/BOS is a specialty winner who is shown in perfect condition and the WD/BOB was a lovely pup who has done very well at specialties already. I think too many people bash all-breed judges when in fact there are many more good all-breed judges than there are bad. But sadly I see a different type emerging that is just to be shown to breeder/judges. I guess finishing with all majors under breeder/judges looks mighty impressive.
Do your homework. Don't expect me to do it for you. I've done mine. There are not "just a few" good all breed judges. There are many. However, be prepared to have an exhibit that is in competition shape (meaning that when the judge goes over him/her, he/she feels muscle, not blubber), does not smell like a damp cellar and looks like a Lab, not a walrus with hair!
Good luck! And YES, PLEASE KEEP ALL THE BREEDER JUDGES AT SPECIALTIES!!!!
And furthermore, although I've had one of my dogs win under this particular judge, I don't think she's Westminster material, but better than the last two we've had for the past two years!
VERY FEW all- breed judges that I would EVER think of giving my entrys to.
That's Ok, because there are VERY FEW ALL-BREED JUDGES! Most of those have been around long enough to be familiar with many, many individual breeds and are excellent at some groups. If you are truly talking about "all-breed" judges, it is a small and very experienced group of people. I'd take my chances with most of them any day.
I think you are confusing this term for both yourself and others. What you probably mean is a non-breeder judge. Some of those are outstanding with Labs and may be known as "sporting specialists". Some have a few groups and are likely better at some breeds than others - just like any human being. Please don't confuse or compare a non-breeder judge - who may have been judging for 5 years or less - with an "all-breed" judge who has likely been a dog person for 50 years or more!
When I read this thread, I went to the West. site, and it listed Cynthia Vogel as judging labs....maybe I misread it. I was curious because of the comments..
From the Westminster site:
Dr. Bob Smith, New Orleans, LA: Cocker Spaniels (all Varieties). Mrs. Cindy Vogels: Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers.
It is confusing because her name follows Dr. Smith, but it is Mrs. Vogels.
