nose bleed in newborns

Has anyone had a litter that the newborns had some slight blood coming from the noses for a couple hours after they were born. The entire litter did this. That I know of the there has been no blood disorders on either the dam or sires sides.

Re: nose bleed in newborns

No. That would concern me though. Hope they're alright.

Re: nose bleed in newborns

but when this happened in an ADULT dog I had, the dog was having an internal hemorrhage. Hopefully this is not the case with your litter, but I would certainly reach out to your Vet ASAP, and see what he or she has to say.

Re: nose bleed in newborns

Could it be a temporary lack of enough vit. K - clotting factor? I think the vet can advise on ways to correct this condition if necessary.

Was the bitch supplemented with Vit. E? Maybe excessive intake?

Re: nose bleed in newborns

Please be very concerned and contact your vet or a neo-natal specialist like Dr. Hutchinson (440-327-8282). I recently had a litter of premies that were delivered at Hutch's. He told me to watch carefully for nosebleeds - these pups did get two shots of vit k within the first 3 days. I did not have any nosebleeds but Hutch said that nosebleeds can indicate internal hemoraging.
