A Kidney Specialist in the NY/CT/NJ or surrounding areas
A friend of mine has a GSD who is in desperate need of a kidney specialist in the NY/CT/NJ area. The one who her Vet referred her to had horrible reviews. Does anyone have any Kidney Specialists they can recommend? Thank you so much in advance.
Re: A Kidney Specialist in the NY/CT/NJ or surrounding areas
I didn't know that nephrology or kidney disease was a specialty in veterinary medicine. I think most kidney disease is handled by veterinary internal medicine specialists. So I think it might be difficult to find someone who truly specializes in kidneys.
But I found the following book on Amazon. I think your friend might try contacting the authors for recommendations. That's what I do when I want a specialized area of internal medicine.
Canine and Feline Nephrology and Urology by Dennis J. Chew DVM DACVIM, Stephen P. DiBartola DVM DACVIM, and Patricia Schenck DVM PhD (Nov 3, 2010)

The first two authors of the book I cited are at Ohio State in Colombus. I would call them to find a referral; veterinary medicine is still a small enough profession that it is likely that they would know others who specialize in kidney disorders.
But as Melody says, Cornell is a darn good vet school and might be an excellent place to look. Here's a renal specialist at Cornell:
Dr. Karen Hilling, DVM, DACVIM
A Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Dr. Karen Hilling has clinical interests that include: all things to do with the kidneys and urinary system (urology), intestinal disease and endoscopy, hepatic diseases, endocrinology, immune-mediated diseases, blood disorders (hematology), interventional radiology, and critical care.

Not sure of the circumstances of her dogs kidney issues but once she sees a specialist there is great info on KF and supplements and diet to support the kidneys at www.dogaware.com
Wishing your friend all the best and hoping they caught this early and can reverse the levels or at least keep it in check.
