Does any one know if there are hormone meds to make a female come in season.

I have missed my girl the past 2 years. She is 6 1/2 , and I cannot afford to waist any more time because she is getting up in age. She is a well bred girl, and has had 2 litters in the past.

Another alternative to drugs is an implant,
Suprelorin, injected into the lip of the vulva like a microchip. It must be removed when no longer needed. It is 94% effective in inducing a season in 5-7 days.

Cabergoline is used to bring girls into season. A minimum of 4 months need to have passed since the last season before starting it. Sounds like the implant works more quickly, but this is another option.

Expensive in the US if you can get it.

These hormones are not without side- effects. You and your vet would have to weigh the benefits of having your girl come in heat when convenient for you against potential health problems for her.
You may want to research this for your vet under drugs.com/veterinary. Many of these potentially dangerous hormones are not available in the US.

Actually I think an implant might be an easier option for you to pursue using a vet without repro experience. Have him call Dr. Bob Van Hutchinson his practice is out in Ohio at (440) 327-8282 I would think he and your vet could talk this out Hutch could give him the entire protocol for this implant and removal.

The product you want is Ovuplant. This is the product that is implanted in the wall of the vulva. Dr. Hutch can send it to your doc with instructions. After the bitch is bred, the implant must be removed.

I used it in January on a 2.5 yr old bitch that had never had a heat cycle. implanted on Tuesday, in heat on Friday. Bred naturally and got a litter of 8. The progesterone spike comes MUCH FASTER than a normal heat cycle, so breeding will most likely be earlier than what you have seen in the past.

She had to be slightly put under to insert the implant. The total for me was about $300. The removal was easy--no need for anesthetic to just peel/scrape it out.

Dr. Hutch does not use Cabergoline any more--prefers the Ovuplant.

Cabergoline is a prolactin agonist, not a hormone treatment. It doesn't have side effects, just removes prolactin from the equation so that the bitch comes in season. It is expensive-- when I've used it, it was prepared by a compounding pharmacy, either as a liquid or in pill form. Pill form is much easier. The last time I used it, pills through the compounding pharmacy to cover a possible 30-40 day administration were a little under $150.

I called his office yesterday, and from what I understand, they charge breeders for answers. I called my vet, and asked them if they could call Dr Hutchinson's office for the info.

I thought maybe an experienced breeder would know the answers about this implant.
