Re: poor sperm quality?

I'm not being critical but with all the stud dog owners that read this list I'm surprised there haven't been more replies. The ones that have are great. Any other advice for this stud owner?

I've heard of enough stud dogs going sterile in recent years. Some have come back to normal production with different treatments and some have not. Can anyone give more suggestions. This could be a boy one of us is thinking of using and won't be able to if the problem isn't found and fixed pardon my wording.

Also, although I know he is not well liked by some breeders.... George Govette of Clone USA has a certain way of bringing back dogs going sterile for alot of years. Maybe someone can get through to him or his staff. I've heard the *recipe* has been given out in the past year so it's not impossible. It's worth a try and if it were my dog I would make a call and take the verbal stuff to get that *recipe*. I only own bitches so this is foreign to me except for what I have heard from other breeders with stud dogs.

Also, for those of you that have not banked your great stud dogs this is all the more reason to bank them as much as you can afford to. You won't regret it. If this was happening to yours or when they're not with you anymore you will be glad you did. Start young when they're virile if they're a good producing stud. There was a post not long ago inquiring about the frozen semen of special boys from many years back. Most that exists is probably for personal use. Some owners are probably sad they didn't bank at all or more then they did.

OP, keep us informed please. I hope they find what's wrong and he becomes good as new again.

Re: poor sperm quality?

Check his thyroid. Ours dropped count dramatically. Hypothyroid. Neutered & placed.

Re: poor sperm quality?

"Baytril for a month , plus an xray/ultrasound of the prostate, and meds for an enlarged prostate, and $700 later, I had to neuter the dog."

quoted from above...

my experience was similar

let us know how it turns out...hoping you have a happy ending

sadly having a Stud Dog ain't all fun and games

thank you so much for your input

Re: Re: poor sperm quality?

you got that right. I'll let everyone know how it goes. Thanks for the input.

Re: poor sperm quality?

Several studies (Google it and you'll see) have shown that selenium and vitamin E deficiency can cause poor semen quality in both humans and animals. Same studies also show that supplementing
with selenium and vitamin E (folic acid and vitamin C too) very often increase the semen quality.
Could be worth looking into to instead of putting all your trust in antibiotics!
I've heard several long time breeders swear by adding extra vitamin E at times of poor semen quality in their stud dogs, so I guess it's not all mumbo-jumbo:-)
