Interesting pdf document and Guardian article on School Refusal

Useful info I have read on the topic of school refusal:-

Thesis written by an Ed Psyche, Karen Grandison on the transition of school refusers from short stay school back into mainstream school.

A Guardian article by Jenn Ashworth, a book author who used to be a school refuser:-

Thanks for these - always good to have this kind of information.

Re: Interesting pdf document and Guardian article on School Refusal

Here is another Thesis on school refusal, this time it is one written from the child's perspective

http://etheses.bham.ac.uk/1142/1/Shilvock10ApEdPsyD1.pdf

Some of these documents are most likely listed in threads here already but if you don't mind I would like to use this thread as a kind of library which is easy to refer back to to have all things of this subject in one place. I search the web so much and there is a lot of dross so I will only be posting useful documents or articles here relevant to anti-bullying and it's link to school refusal. Thanks Clarity.

Re: Interesting pdf document and Guardian article on School Refusal

Hi Clarity

Perhaps we could also put all website referrals under a link in the resource section? I am currently overseeing the site for SImon - and can make a suggestion to him in regards to where we think these kind of resources might best sit on the site. What do you think? I am glad you came up with the one thrown out of court as I have tried a couple of times to locate where I posted it and couldn't find it to help someone out.

Re: Interesting pdf document and Guardian article on School Refusal

Hi Linda, that would be brilliant to have all resources in one place. I guess it would take a bit of admin time sifting through which ones were suitable for resources. I'm an avid document and article searcher so I will just keep adding links here for now.

The court case article is a great one to have. It is one I have printed out and have ready for the next professional who mentions the word, legal or prosecution to me!

The following link is a physicians guide to treating youth with SR, there are some useful questionnaires and tables, I filled in the parent's questionnaire and most of my answers were around 5/6 with some 3/4's.

A wonderful TED talk by Brene Brown called 'The power of vulnerability'

Blurb: Brene Brown studies human connection -- our ability to empathize, belong, love. In a poignant, funny talk at TEDxHouston, she shares a deep insight from her research, one that sent her on a personal quest to know herself as well as to understand humanity. A talk to share.

Re: Interesting pdf document and Guardian article on School Refusal

Hi Clarity,

Sorry I have only just got around to asking Simon if he can add these resources under the resources or add a new 'on-line resource' section. Hopefully they can be filed for easy reference. I'd keep posting under this heading at the moment - as some people might find them as they sift through posts.
ALl the best,
Linda

Clarity Bell
Useful info ... school refusal:-

Thesis written by an Ed Psyche,

A Guardian article by Jenn Ashworth,

Sorry everyone, I have been taking a sabbatical from School Refusal recently, and am only just catching up.

I will try to get to this today.

On the home front, things seem to be going quite well for us just now. We are actively planning the eternal student's next two years.

Re: Interesting pdf document and Guardian article on School Refusal

If these are useful resources to someone then great if they can be added to a section somewhere.

If not then it's no problem just to post them in this thread for now. I keep bumping it up myself as I come across things. Feel free to remove anything you don't feel is relevant.

Good to hear things are going well for you Simon.

The University of Nevada has a School Refusal and Anxiety disorders clinic run by the author of some of the books you may all be familiar with -Christopher Kearney. You can order his books on-line and I have just ordered the following Parent guide and also the therapists guide. I am hoping it puts the whole CBT more into perspective for me as I am finding that some psychologists do not seem to be approaching CBT in ways that I would have thought appropriate. They are not giving my son steps to take and then monitoring them. It seems to still be all talk. Here is a link to ordering the books.

Re: Interesting pdf document and Guardian article on School Refusal

Linda I am finding the same thing, I have been actively seeking support and help for my daughter for a year now and still she hasn't had any kind of therapy from CAMHs since I turned down sessions with a lady who had my d in tears after suggesting she would be able to stand at the bottom of the school hill while all the kids came out in just a few weeks time (this was last Feb).

I am constantly amazed at how little effective support is given and yet the blame for our children's condition has no problem coming our way!

I ordered this book last week too am watching the post box ready for it to pop through any day now! Hopefully we can compare successes with the suggestions in it soon :)

Re: Interesting pdf document and Guardian article on School Refusal

Hi Clarity,

I said I had ordered them but now I find no record of having ordered them - perhaps why they have not arrived! It was a busy time leading up to christmas and we always have so much on our minds - perhaps I just hadn't ordered them afterall!

I think it is very hard to find the right help. Interesting to read about MST from Jacqui. Seems the same kind of thing happening there. From those who are supposed to understand anxiety and depression - they seem to be too distracted by the fact that they are working with 'children' where consequences are supposed to work. if they were working with adults - would they do this? Perhaps young kids - yes - but with our children - I think the approach slip slides all around the place.
Take care,
Linda

Re: Interesting pdf document and Guardian article on School Refusal

Linda I totally agree, I just posted a response on Jacqui's thread on this topic too. It means so much to discuss with with other parents who really understand - it's sad any of us or our kids have to go through this but 'eachother' really is the best support we all have.

I'm looking forward to getting my workbook - meanwhile i've discussed some of the info in that book over on Jacqui's thread and some resources from it are linked there. :)
