Your thoughts and prayers are needed

When I arrived home and check emails I found a note from Charlie Rhoads informing me that while he was checking out of the Sheraton @ 0130, EMS was responding to a call from Fran Willinsky concerning our shipmate "Big Ski" who was suffering shortness of breath.

I called Fran and they had already arrived home. Ski was medicated and cleared for travel and is scheduled to see his physician today for re-occurring congestive heart failure.

I know that all of his shipmates are concerned about his condition and will check in on him when they get a chance.

I also had an email from Alice Cowles, wife of our WWII Shipmate Ray Cowles Tm3/c. Alice and Ray attended our Groton reunions in 2000 & 2007. This is my first notice that Ray was not in good health, and I'm upset that I did not check my emails while in Charleston as I could have delivered this message to Ray's Shipmates in person.

Dear Paul,

Because of the Sea Robin reunion this month Ray wants you to know he is on
his Last Patrol. He has terminal cancer. He handles his illness as he did the
Submarine service with a first class mind, still in tact, and a disposition to
match.Never a complaint. His Hospice nurse is a former Marine and encourages
Ray to talk about his Sea Robin adventures during World War II.

Ray was an original crew member of the Sear Robin, from it's launching in
Portsmouth,NH.,to the end of the war.

The last reunion in Groton remains a highlight in his life.He was thrilled
to meet a few of his former shipmates and hopes they are well and able to be
in Charleston this year.

He has donated some material to the Nautilus Museum. His two sons, and I,
remain very interested, and proud,of his service.

We want to congratulate you and your committee for the superb job you do to
make the reunions such a special affair.

Fondly, Alice Cowles

May the Almighty Creator watch over and care for our Shipmates.

Re: Your thoughts and prayers are needed

Thanks for the update Paul. Things happen quickly. Ski and Fran enjoyed themselves at the table when we moved into the other room and had the raffle. He appeared OK then. If you get any other information on Ski please let us know. Sorry to hear about Ray Cowles. Unfortunately we will all eventually have a last patrol. Please keep us informed about Ray.
It was wonderful being with everyone in Charleston.
