NEW SS-407 Photo discovered

I came across this photo on a British web site, dedicated to ships of the world. At first I thought it was PORTSMOUTH, NH, circa 1964. 1964, because we won the "E" and also because we still had that large Sonar dome on the fwd. deck then.

Then I recalled that we made a trip to UK & Holland prior to going into the yards in Nov. 1964.

I tracked down a web site hosted by British Submariners and posted a question there asking if the photo was taken in the UK. I received an answer in a very few minute.

Hi Paul,

It is indeed Portsmouth, but the buildings beyond the boat are of H.M.S. Dolphin which is situated in Fort Blockhouse and was the submariners training establishment, sadly no longer. H.M.S. Dolphin is still there but it is now a tri services medical training centre, Dolphin is actually in Gosport across the harbour from Portsmouth from the photo it would appear that the boat is departing for possibly her home base.

I would imagine that whilst in Portsmouth the boat was berthed alongside the other boats in Dolphin.

Hope this helps.

Neat find Paul. Good looking picture and history.

Re: NEW SS-407 Photo discovered

Paul, I have that exact photo. I got it on ebay a few years back. Was going to send it to you but I guess I got lazy. Date on the back is 10/64. Will get it out soon.

Re: NEW SS-407 Photo discovered

Thanks Ed. I would LOVE to have a GOOD SCAN of that photo, or just mail to me and I'll do it.

I recall the events very well. We arrived on OCT 4 and TROCHIMOWICZ and I spent the entire night going through our quals exam and walkthrough with LT Rosenburg. I was qualified on OCT 5. Some time after tha me, Buttons, Clauson, and Troch took the train to LONDON for a day or two. The James Bond movie GOLDFINGER had just opened and we saw it at a theater in Piccadilly Square. We took an few bus tours and had a great time. I still talk about that trip.

The building in the background, which I was unable to read the writing on was the British Submarine School, HMS DOLPHIN.

I've received several replies from my initial inquiry and received these photos that complete the story.

included with the photos was the following...

I have included a couple of images taken out of a book which was commissioned to show the history of H.M.S. Dolphin, I hope they aren't too big for your mail box and that they may be of some use to you, if not there
is always the gash bin, sorry, trash can.

Just had a quick shufty at a couple of pages of the website for Sea Robin and it looks as always that submariners the world over are alike, still not
afraid to enjoy themselves and rekindle old friendships.

Take care and keep your bubble level.

Sir, greetings from the UK.

Regret, I am not a shipmate, unless you would count Dinghy sailor..

I happened upon your query whilst visiting the Submariners Association website and offer the following information:

The photo is certainly taken from Portsmouth, more accurately Southsea probably from the defensive ramparts of the sea wall adjacent to Broad street. The direction is West facing across the narrow entrance to Portsmouth Harbour and towards Gosport.

I am sure you will receive further and better information particularly about the Naval facility HMS Dolphin .

Best wishes.

Barry Woodward.

Re: NEW SS-407 Photo discovered

I remember. We were in Portsmouth for a 'couple days. Some guys from our boat went out on a British boat and some British sailors went on the 407 boat. I remember that the UK Boats didn't first 'Trim Up' at periscope depth. They went directly to the object depth. Also, the Brits would come over to the Sea Robin for the Open Refers and we would go to the Brits boats for the free rum rations. I also remember drinking room temperature "Red Barrel" bear in the Brits. sailors club. We also sang "we fired our guns and the british kept a commin, down the Mississippi to the gulf of Mexico" in their club. They were a real good group of guys.....
