ROY "Buck" Snyder Em3/c - Rest Your Oar

Roy Lester "Buck" Snyder, 85, of Buffalo Gap Highway, died Saturday, December 26, 2009, in Augusta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born on December 9, 1924, in Mount Crawford, a son of Jesse Elmer Snyder Sr. and Lula (Fisher) Snyder. He was a graduate of Churchville High School. He served during World War II in the United States Navy as a submarine sailor aboard the USS Sea Robin (SS-407) during its last war patrol. Mr. Snyder was employed by E. I. DuPont for 38 years prior to retirement. He was a member of Jerusalem Chapel United Brethren in Christ Church. On November 15, 1950, he married the former Nell Smiley, who preceded him in death on February 12, 1996. He was also preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jesse Snyder Jr. Surviving are two sons, Rick Snyder and his wife, Ruthie, of Churchville and Ben Snyder and his wife, Kitty, of McGaheysville; a sister, Christine Snyder of Staunton; a brother, John Snyder of Staunton; three grandchildren, Andrew and Daniel Snyder and Benny Grubbs; and three great-grandchildren. A graveside funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Green Hill Cemetery, officiated by Pastor Dennis Sites and Mr. Harold Fry. Active pallbearers will be Charles Bell, Benny Cook, Brent Cook, Joe O'Gorek, Jim Vass, and Ronnie Hawkins. Honorary pallbearers will be George Baylor, Don Hanger, Mark Hanger, Pat Smiley, Arlen Hanger, Gerald Botkin, Harry Harris, and Russell Baylor. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, December 29, 2009, at Bear Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Churchville Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 608, Churchville, VA 24421.
