Re: OBITUARY - LCDR John Lyding

I liked working with him also. I guess we got to know him better by working closely in the Conn, etc. He tried to be a hard-ass and I'm sure many guys did not appreciate that part of him. I also sure he caught crap from being a former enlisted man.

After I failed my ET3 exam I wanted to change rate to EN and submitted a request that Lyding rejected. Fast forward to the next exam and this time I passed & was advanced. A few months after that I received a note from Lyding who was stationed in England at the time. He went on to congratulate me on my advancement to PO3 and that I should have more confidence in my abilities going forward, etc. He wished me well.

I always remember his kindness and the fact that he went so far out of his way to contact me. I still have his note somewhere.

HAND SALUTE XO, REST YOUR OAR.

Re: OBITUARY - LCDR John Lyding

Not a big fan of the Man. When I had a run in with a marine in Portsmouth he sided with the marine. I got 7 days extra duty. When I tried to extend for a year, he said ship or not, no extension. these more, but I'll let it go.

Re: OBITUARY - LCDR John Lyding

He taught me the Binay numbering System in the After Battery. He use to lecture back there occasionally. A great officer but a little "Rough around the edges."

Re: OBITUARY - LCDR John Lyding

I typo'ed "Binary." I meant "Binary," as in "Base 2."

Re: OBITUARY - LCDR John Lyding

RIP John Lyding. I always got along with him.
I believe it was Lyding who in 1965 when I was transferring to the west coast remarked to me that I had requested Air Conditioning and Refrigeration school in the past and that he had obtained a quota for me to the course. I guess it was going away present from Sea Robin. He did well by me.
