WWII submarine veteran, Herbert Frederick Ziegler, Jr., Sunrise of Leawood Assisted Living, Leawood, Kansas, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2020 in the presence of his loving twin daughters.
He was born March 3, 1924, Herb was the eldest son and the third of seven children born to Herbert F. Ziegler, Sr. and Florence Schweiger Ziegler.
He then graduated from the Navy Midshipman's School, Plattsburg, NY, and the Navy Submarine School, New London, Conn.
In 1945, he served aboard the submarine USS Sea Robin, SS 407, on its third successful war patrol off the coasts of Japan and Korea, and was awarded the Navy Commendation Ribbon for his services as Torpedo Data Computer Operator. After the war, he was released from the Navy as a Lt. (junior grade).
Using the GI Bill, he then spent one year at the University of Fribourg, Fribourg, Switzerland, after which he returned to Kansas City to work for three years in the family produce business, a business he had grown up in.
Then in 1952, at age 28, he started a new career as a Manufacturer's Agent in the Mechanical Power Transmission field. He served as the president of the Herbert F. Ziegler, Jr. Company until his retirement in 1988 at the age of 64.

We will miss Herb. He was a quiet fixture at several reunions over the years. He reported to Sea Robin for her 3rd patrol, fully qualified to operate the TDC. HAND SALUTE

Herb, RIP
