The Cursillo has four major building blocks. The "mentality", "essence", "purpose" and "method". I have already posted excerpts from the FICM on the mentality, essence and method. Today I will post an excerpt on the PURPOSE. Later I will do a Summary "in laymen's terms" of what these excerpts mean to us and the changes "proposed" by National.





Purpose


106..Since it is a movement of the Church, the Cursillo Movement has the same apostolic purpose as the Church herself. And the Church, as Pope Paul VI told us, exists to evangelize.


111..In the definition of the Cursillo Movement, its purpose is expressed thus: "The Cursillo Movement is a movement of the Church which by the means of its own method makes it possible for people to live what is fundamental for being a Christian, and to live it together; It helps people discover and fulfill their personal vocations, and it promotes the creation of core groups of Christians who leaven their environments with the Gospel.





This one is a little easier to understand!!

Mentality


As I stated in an earlier email In the Fundamental Ideas of the Cursillo Movement





Par 157 states..Within the Cursillo Movement, method is nothing other than mentality and essence converted into life..





We looked at the Essence a little earlier, now lets look at the Mentality:





Par 4..The Cursillo mentality is creative and freeing, and so gives rise to criteria rather than rules. A criterion liberates, whereas even the best rules can at times choke or paralyze, obscuring the mentality itself and causing one to lose sight of the goal.


5..Thanks to this creativity, the history of the why and wherefore of the Cursillo is something that is never complete or finished. It is a history that goes on being made with every new day of life, and so the Movement will always continue to have new purpose.


Par 37..Faithful to the inductive method, the Cursillo Movement must constantly reflect on reality, and with that reflection enrich its mentality without losing its identity. Toward this goal, the mentality has two services to offer:


a) The mentality is the source of the identity of the Cursillo Movement; it is what enables us to do different things with the same purpose, and it is what warns us against doing the same thing with different purposes. The mentality is what makes it possible for the Cursillo to branch out without losing its identity.


b) At the same time, the mentality is also the source of evolution for the Cursillo





38.. Consequently:


- The present reality does not indicate a rupture with the past, but rather its growth and maturity.


- Updating the Cursillo is mandated by the particular richness of its basic principles, by the needs of the times, and by the new fields of human experience it is entering.


- In the Cursillo Movement, unity is formed in the midst of plurality. This means that the Movement places more importance on mentality and persons than on method; on basic principles than on specific means.

In an earlier email I quoted the "Fundamental Ideas of the Cursillo Movement" on what the Method of the Cursillo is. In that definition it mentioned the mentality and essence of the movement as driving factors. So I think we need to look at both of these definitions also. It might worth noting here that in the "Leaders Manual published by National (the one Lou Robbio wants us to use) it states "The official Policy for the operation of Cursillo Movement throughout the world is The Fundamentals Ideas of the Cursillo Movement.





Essence


72..Every Living being is subject to change; nevertheless, each one preserves a core identity. It expresses itself in new outward forms, but at the same tine it remains always itself. From this point of view, essence is that which pertains to the being itself - it is that which makes the being to be what it is, and it is that which determines it mode of being, in both its static and dynamic aspects.


73..The Cursillo Movement, which is something living and dynamic, is thus subject to change and improvement, But the Cursillo Movement, as a being with a life of its own, also has an internal nucleus which causes it to be what it is and which keeps it being what it is, throughout all of its changes......The Movement has been evolving throughout its existence, adapting itself to the various situations in the Church and in the world. Nevertheless, those who are well acquainted with the Cursillo Movement recognize these changes as being authentic expressions of it.


75..The Essence of the Cursillo Movement consists, then, of these elements:


1) it is a movement;


2) it is a movement of the Church;


3) it has a method of its own;


4) it makes possible the living and sharing of what is fundamental for being a Christian;


5) it helps one discover and fulfill one's personal vocation;


6) it fosters the creation of core groups of Christians;


7) it enables these groups to leaven their environments with the Gospel.


76.. This definition or description keeps in clear focus the what (essence), the why (purpose), and the how (method) of the Cursillo Movement.





I (Randy) think that if you read and review the above topic, you will not find anything that the PR Cursillo Center is doing that would detract for the ESSENCE of the Cursillo.

157..Within the Cursillo Movement, method is nothing more than mentality and essence converted into life, or made a


reality. We are not speaking here of an application made impulsively, capriciously, uncritically, left to the mercy of personal


taste, done on the spur of the moment. We are speaking of an application that is thought out, planned, and accomplished


with a view toward maximum effectiveness.


158..The method exists for the purpose of attaining and advancing the very life which engenders the Movement. It is a


function of life. It exists to prevent the identity of the Movement from becoming distorted and to ensure its essence,


purpose, and mentality are not deflected or mutilated. It exists to give the movement a mode of action that is appropriate,


fruitful, and effective. The Movement does not exist for the sake of the method; the method exists for the sake of the


Movement.


159..Only an evolution of the mentality can necessitate a change of plans in the method, so as to protect the mentality


against losing its identity. When application of the mentality no longer produces desired results, it is time to consider


readjusting the method being used to apply the mentality. Something is wrong if the mentality becomes stagnant. The


Cursillo mentality is not something rigid; on the contrary, it leaves people free to do different things in diverse cultural areas,


as long as their choices uphold what is essential to the Movement.




What this is saying is that the Cursillo is a living entity that needs to grow with the times and that things that are well


thought out, well planned, and not contrary to the Purpose are supposed to happen.


Some of these changes may be what National wants but 99% of them are what we already have.
