Weakness and High Fever

My friend is at a loss as to what is going on with her dog.
Symptoms-
Fast onset of muscle weakness and high fever.
One minute fine and the next minute not able to walk.
Weakness gets worse, panting and fever goes up to 103.
Taken to vet at once.
Dog diagnosised with slipped disk or soft tissue injury. Temp back to normal within the hour.
Next day weakness gets worse and fever shoots up to 106.5!!!!!!!
Dog is rushed back to the vet.
Temp is brought down to normal and all tests and blood work come back normal.
Dog still weak and wobbeley(?).
Thoughts????????

Re: Weakness and High Fever

Tick-borne disease!!! Not necessarily Lyme. Erlichia can cause neurological symptoms along with a high fever. I'd have a full tick panel run, forget about the SNAP tests.

Re: Weakness and High Fever

SNAP test . let us know how the dog is doing

Re: Re: Weakness and High Fever

YES PLease tell her to get a full tick borne disease panel. I would also start the dog on Doxy if it were me until the results come back. The last time I had the panel done it took a few days.
GOOD LUCK!

Re: Re: Weakness and High Fever

Lepto perhaps?

Re: Weakness and High Fever

Also have them check for discospondylitis (sp?) Infection of the spinal disk. Debbie had it - sudden high fever (106) and it has to be treated with IV antibiotics.

Re: Weakness and High Fever

Another rule out would be Meningitis.

Re: Re: Weakness and High Fever

Time to go to a specialist- preferably an internal medicine specialist - there are a million things it could be. An online diagnosis is impossible but lots of good suggestions on things to look for.

Re: Weakness and High Fever

Thanks for all the replies for my friend's dog.
Vet has checked all of the things mentioned here and then some.
All tests are negative/normal.
Temp is normal now and still walking stiffly, but at least walking.
Only other symptom is some bloody discharge from the nose. Once in awhile and only a few drops. This just appeared. Dog goes in for a checkup tomorrow.
Has been treated with almost all of the suggested drugs mentioned too.
Appetite, temp and stool are back to normal.
Still a mystery!

Re: Weakness and High Fever

I hope all goes well, the dog needs to see a specialist asap even if doing better. Something is very wrong and they need to find out what it is so they can treat it in a timely and correct fashion. I wouldn't even attempt to guess what it is.

Best of luck and health, keep the board posted on how things go please

Re: Weakness and High Fever

This is strange. I have a dog that had almost the same type of symptoms with the weakness and a fever of 105. No nose blood though. Weakness was not that severe.
The only other difference was that with my girl, her back end went weak first and it progressed to the front end.
But, within a day, and lots of rest, she got up and acted like it never happened. Maybe her problem was muscle tightness or something but she has been fine since. Hope the same for your friend's dog.

Re: Weakness and High Fever

I forgot to mention that the weakness did start in the rear legs and progressed to the front.
It was at the point that both front and rear were crossing and made it impossible to walk.
At least the poor dog is walking, slowly and stiffly.
No more cross overs.
A specialist was called in on the case and could not offer any other tests to run. Did not have any other thoughts on what it is and felt that the original vet did everything possible so far.
Help!

Re: Weakness and High Fever

If it was my dog and I got the response and advice on lyme from your thread. I would ask my doc for doxy 4week treatment. I have heard and read of many dog dieing and only had to do something as easy as to treat a dog with meds.

Re: Weakness and High Fever

High fever is either infection or inflammation, neuro signs would make me want to get a spinal fluid analysis; has any of these vets done that? That's the first diagnostic thing I would want to do for this dog. Also an MRI of the brain might be warranted. The treatment would be very different for infection (viral, fungal, bacterial)or inflammation.
What kind of specialist did she see? I would go with a real good internist or neurologist. Don't know what area you live in, but perhaps there is a teaching hospital or excellent specialty practice in a metropolitan area nearby.
It's frustrating to be told "we don't know what's wrong with your dog," but I think your friend needs to perservere and see the best specialist she can, with all the diagnostic tools available, like brain MRI, CT, etc. if warranted.
This has been going on way too long with no answers; they need top-notch specialty care at this point. I feel bad for the dog and the owners, they could be losing her if they don't step up the diagnostics.

Re: Weakness and High Fever

Lyme test came back negative.
Dog was on Pred initially, now on Doxy.
Spinal Tap was done, no menengitis.
Specialist was from a teaching University.
They are considering the Cat scan this week.
Thanks for the comments, please keep them coming.
The answer is out there somewhere, I pray.

Re: Weakness and High Fever

dog nose will bleed with tick bourne disease as a distinct symptom. RMSF will actually cause very similar symptoms to rat poison. it causes the blood to thin. Infact get almost always a blood tranfusion and vit k to create blood clotting. The dog is also put on treatment of antibiotics for seven days and the dog does feel better.Soon days pass and the dogs returns to being sick agian. More test are done and the obvious is over looked.dogs do die from RMSF and it does pass onto the puppies if mom is carrying them. keep and eye on your dog

Re: Weakness and High Fever

I think it was a brain MRI they were considering to do this week.
Sorry if I got it wrong.

Re: Weakness and High Fever

Does RMSF stand for Rocky Mt Spotted fever?
That test came back negative too!
Please keep the thoughts coming.
Maybe some prayers too, thanks!

Re: Weakness and High Fever

could this dog be eating this food that has been recalled, the can and package foiled food?

Re: Weakness and High Fever

Some of the recalled food caused kidney damage, which would show up in the bloodwork. I think Concerned Friend said the bloodwork was normal and fever and neuro signs are the main problem with this dog, not inappetance, vomiting, and dehydration, which you would expect to see with kidney failure.
We are starting to see concerned owners of dogs and cats coming in for bloodwork due to the food recall. We had a young cat in the hospital for a week with acute renal failure that now, putting two and two together, probably was affected by the tainted food. This cat refused to eat the food the owner brought in for it (on the recalled list), was vomiting, and the kidney values were sky high. Then as the kidneys were diuresed on fluids and meds for several days, the cat started feeling more like eating and ate Fancy Feast (safe food). The owner brought the cat home Saturday, tried to feed the original food, and the cat refused! Smart cat!

Re: Weakness and High Fever

Grateful for everyone's concern.
Just an update.
The dog is not being fed the tainted food involved in the recall. Thank goodness. That would put my friend over the edge!
Nose bleeding stopped. If it recurs, a scope of the nose will be done.
No other new symptoms.
Neither the vet or any specialists contacted can offer any other tests to be done except the MRI which is scheduled this week.
Taking one day at a time.

Re: Weakness and High Fever

I have been told by my vet and a consulting vet that the definitive test for all of the various tick borne diseases is if the dog responds to antibiotics such as tetracycline/doxycycline; many of the tick borne diseases are not included in all tests and there is a significant chance of false negatives.

Re: Weakness and High Fever

Just saw the message about Neosporosis on this forum.
Anyone familiar with it? Do my friend's dog's symtoms sound like it?
Still looking for an answer to the mystery.
