I just spoke with Royal Canine out of concern since I feed Royal Canine/Sensible Choice Natural Blend kibble.
According to RC the foods effected with excess Vit. D were canned veterinarian diets and only certain varieties. No dry food and no retail food was effected.
They also stated that these effected foods were removed from the market in Feb. of 2006 and destroyed.
They have no idea why this article has been duplicated a year later.
Any thoughts or any more info Wag the Dog? I'm all ears.
I got the news item from a Canadian dog list this morning; the point is not that the recall occurred a year ago but that the class action suit has been launched. The news item is dated yesterday.
This apparently affected wet vet foods; I think the signifigance is not that it happened (and there was no publicity about it at that time that I recall), but that problems like this occur in many brands of feed, both animal and human. Probably more often than we are ever made aware of, particularly in the past. With the new speed of info transfer around the world, it's easier to hear about, and get the word out about, problems of any kind.
And I don't know if raw diets are really any safer; I know a breeder who spent the Christmas season in the hospital -- very ill with Salmonella, that was traced back to the raw diet she feeds her crew. And she is not ignorant of safe food handling practices -- she has a medical condition that leaves her immune-compromised.
Re: Re: Re: Info for those who feed Royal Canin...
I went to a breeding/fertility seminar with a fertility specialist from OVC. She said that barf diets are a major problem, are her biggest pet peeve, and that 100% of the barf fed dogs in their study tested positive for salmonella. I got a minpin once from a barf feeder, the dog was in horrible shape. After I fed her a quality manufactured food for a few months, she really improved. Sure, he might not have been doing it right, but being an international judge, I am sure he had no shortage of resources, and likely more than many. I know there are some who swear by it, and more power to them if it works for them, but it's certainly not for me.
