dirt-shavings-hay?

What is your preference in a contained area to let 5 week old puppies go outside to go to releave them selves. I don't want to initiate any alergies. Some types of shavings, hay even mulch can be a problem. What seems to work the best? I have a dirt area that I want to let them use.
Thanks for your resonse in advance....

Re: dirt-shavings-hay?

I use good quality pine shavings for my youngsters of that age. They take to it fairly quickly AND the side benefit is that if you hang onto a show pup or two, they're already "conditioned" to going in the shavings if you have to use a public x-pen!

Re: Re: dirt-shavings-hay?

I use super shavings.. it works the best and no flakes on coat,, or powder around the nose,

Michigan state uses this!

Re: dirt-shavings-hay?

Where do you puchase these shavings from?
Is it sold in bags or by the truck load?
TIA

Re: dirt-shavings-hay?

In the midwest, you can get the bagged shavings from a Tractor Supply store or Quality Farm & Fleet (if there are any left). Price is quite reasonable.

Re: Re: dirt-shavings-hay?

WalMart also carries them. It isn't as big a bale, but 1 bale lasts me for at least a week for $5.00
