Folic Acid

What types of supplements do some of you give that include folic acid? Heard this was a good cautionary measure against possible cleft palates. Anyone use a supplement before or during breeding their girls? We heard that too much supplementaion isn't a good idea. Thoughts everyone? Just trying to gather info.from those with more experience.

Re: Folic Acid

There was a good thread re this on Laura's forum:

Re: Folic Acid

thanks for your response......guess there aren't many folks supplementing.

Re: Folic Acid

I've always read/heard that you shouldn't supplement if you feed a good food. Just increase the food in the 5th week gradually. I do think the folic acid is a good idea.

Re: Folic Acid

Don't know about folic acid but have read that excess vit. A and D during pregnancy has been shown to possibly cause cleft palates.

I don't supplement just feed good quality puppy food from 5 weeks on.

Here is a link FYI

Re: Re: Folic Acid

My vet has said there may be a folic acid/cleft palet connection. I've never asked him about supplementing.

I've always been under the impression that the folic acid/cleft palet connection was a positive one.
