It's Dr. Jon again. There is still NEW information coming out
about the recall. For the most part, it has fallen off the radar of
the mainstream press so I'm having to dig a little harder for
information but am still working to keep you up-to-date. I'm also
still getting tons of emails from you and from veterinarians about
pets still being seen and treated with kidney failure secondary to
the contaminated food.
I want to remind you that it is important that you keep checking
the recalled list of foods. Make sure the food you feed your pet is
not listed. Most of the foods have been pulled from the grocery
shelves but you may still have some recalled foods at home. For a

Right now, let me tell you about the latest findings. The Food and
Drug Administration announced (FDA) that the contaminated wheat
gluten and rice protein concentrate imported from China was
mislabeled and was really wheat flour contaminated with melamine
and melamine-related products.
It is also believed that the contamination was deliberate. It is
thought that the Chinese added the melamine to the wheat to
increase the "protein" concentration of the product making it to
appear to have a higher protein concentration than it really had.
Melamine is rich in nitrogen which can give the illusion of protein.
Recently, tests conducted on contaminated pet food and the
necropsies of affected animals have suggested that a combination of
chemicals--each alone, seemingly nontoxic--form insoluble substances
that results in crystals that physically damage the kidneys.
