Osteosarcoma

Would anyone linebreed on a dog who had osteosarcoma or a similar cancer that may or may not be hereditary?
Just wondering if it's been done.

Re: Osteosarcoma

I would be relunctant to line breed to this type of cancer. I line bred to a dog whose dam died of cancer at a young age and sure enough one of my puppies ended up with cancer at an even younger age of 3 yrs old.

Cancer in Labradors is on the rise and not just in old dogs but very young labradors. The Cancer specialist for canines told me that they are seeing an alarming number of young Labradors coming in for treatment. Ultimately, the chemo and radiation only buy the dog 3 to 6 months at the most before it comes back.

Re: Re: Osteosarcoma

Of course cancer is on the rise in all breeds. Look what we put on our grass to make it pretty, look what we wash our cars with, look at the pollution in the air. I would have a tendency to think geograpy could play a part.

Re: Re: Re: Osteosarcoma

I don't really believe cancer is on the rise. I think that diagnosis and treatment of cancer is on the rise. Years ago, people were not as vet crazy with their dogs like they are now. I wonder how many dogs died of cancer, without ever having a diagnosis. Or Lyme disease. Or any one of a million ailments that we are now treating for. Those of you that are as old as the hills like I am: How often do you remember running your pets to the vet for limping, or vomiting, or just not acting themselves? Anyone of them could have had cancer, but it went undiagnosed.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Osteosarcoma

I had a dog who sired a pup that got osteosarcoma. The dog also had a littermate with osteosarcoma.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Osteosarcoma

Do you happen to know at what age either of the dogs were that developed the osteosarcoma? Thanks.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Osteosarcoma

Sure environmental crud can cause cancers but if you look at the rate of cancer in Goldens and Dobermans to name a couple breeds, it does run in certain lines. I've been receiving the doberman digest for a few years and have been reading all the stories and medical information on this breed. Certain Cancers run rampant in this breed. Why....There is alot of line breeding going on in this breed to dogs who produce cancer.

I belive the same can happen in any breed, including the Labrador.

Re: Osteosarcoma

Linebreed with osteoscarcoma?

Hell NO

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Osteosarcoma

I'm curious about this as well. I wonder if it normally happens early in the dog's life. I had a young Dobie with osteosarcoma who barely made it to his 5th birthday.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Osteosarcoma

The first to come up with it was probably around 2. His leg was amputated and he lived to a good old age. The second developed it at less than one year of age. He too had an amputation but died not too long after that. I gave that family a boy I was running on.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Osteosarcoma

I'm thinking you must have caught it early for him to live to an early age after amputation. By the time my boy showed any outward signs (a slight limp), it had spread too far to save him.
