Continue to fight CA AB 1634

-- permission to cross post is granted --

AB 1634 was amended on May 31, 2007 and the vote in the full Assembly may
occur as soon as next Monday. Here is the official
version
http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/pub/07-08/bill/asm/ab_1601-1650/ab_1634_bill_20070531_amended_asm_v94.pdf

It is critical that all clubs, associations, and other groups that oppose
AB 1634 reconfirm their opposition. Otherwise it will be assumed that
their concerns were addressed by the revisions to the bill. They must
reconfirm their positions via fax with all undecided Assembly
members. This should be done today, Friday June 1 in case the vote occurs
the following Monday.

Include above the main body of the letter:
RE: AB 1634 (California Healthy Pets Act), as amended May 31, 2007 -- OPPOSE

It is also imperative that individuals who oppose AB 1634 reconfirm their
opposition with their own Assembly member, or else it will be assumed that
their concerns were addressed by the revisions to the bill. This should
be done today, Friday June 1 in case the vote occurs the following
Monday. NAIA has a tool that makes sending faxes from individuals
easy. See instructions copied below.

Every letter counts. The experts tell us that the vote is too close to
call, and some Assembly members are still undecided. Let's make sure
those undecided votes go our way. Get those letters faxed! Spread the word!

AB 1634 was amended today. Here is a draft of the bill with the changes.

[note, the official version is above]
We have reviewed these changes and continue to strongly oppose the bill.

The bill can not be fixed. It is fundamentally flawed and must be defeated.

We are approaching a critical time in the fight against AB 1634, so
we have enabled our lobby tool
at www.capwiz.com/naiatrust/home to
send faxes as well as emails.

To use the lobby center, click on the link above, then scroll to the link
that says State Elected Officials. Then place CA on the drop down tab
and hit go. Once you are on the California page, put in you zip code and
then click on AB 1634.

Read the alert, then scroll down to the "Take Action" Center. Once
there choose your delivery option: email, fax or letter.

Now that the amendments have been approved, it is imperative to write once
again. If your assembly member doesn't hear from you again, s/he might
believe that your issues have been addressed.

The amendments do not change our opposition to the bill. AB 1634 does not
target the source of pet surplus problems so it can not achieve its stated
goal. Further, the bill is unnecessary because dramatic declines in
shelter impounds and euthanasias have occurred over the last several
decades without the need for such intrusive legislation
on pet owners . AB 1634 will not only not achieve its stated goal; it will
lead to many unintended consequences: AB 1634 will undermine the
long-term shelter population trend, harm the economy, and drive pet owners
out of the system.

Please go to the NAIA Trust Lobby Center (
www.capwiz.com/naiatrust/home) now
and write and send your letter! The talking points are provided as guides.
Modify them to fit your point of view.
