Sex of pups in litter question

I know there's an old adage about the sex of pups in a litter, has something to do with timing of breeding etc.
Does anyone remember what it was?

Also, from a repro point of view - I was told second hand through a repro vet that one or the other sex was stronger and if there is a problem with semen, that sex is more likely to develop than the other sex.
What sex was it?

I'm having a brain fart today!
Up all night whelping a litter (all healthy and strong)

Thanks!

Re: Sex of pups in litter question

OK - this is by no means exact science, but it is factual. X sperm swim more slowly (they are bigger) and they live longer. Y sperm swim more quickly and die sooner. So if you inseminate somewhat early, you increase your chances of having girls, and if you inseminate right on or a little late, you are somewhat more likely to have boys. It all depends on the actual ovulation date.

Remember that other variables can have a lot of influence. The stud dog may not produce a 50:50 ratio of X to Y, for example, so that can throw things off.
