Normal whelping 3 weeks ago. Pups starting on solid food and doing well.
From out of nowhere, the bitch gets cramps then spikes a high fever 105.6 F. Abdomen feels hard. Fever goes down to normal and the bitch eats normally (Innova and Pro Plan Puppy). Then the cramps and fever return.

Been breeding and whelping sucessfully for many years and this is a first for me.
Going to vet today…anyone ever had a similar situation?

Definately go to the Vet - could it be a retained puppy???

Or placenta....do you know if you counted one for each puppy?

Yes been yesterday to have blood tests and all neg. Went back today to have x-ray and ultrasound and all neg. While there one breast started to get hard. They think it is the beginning of Mastitis. Came home with 2 Antibiotics and lots of hope that this will do it. Will apply warm compresses and cold packs.

The exact same thing happened with my last litter, and it never started until I put the babies on solid food, and then obviously, they weren't feeding as much from Mom and she got Mastitis.
