AB1634 Did NOT pass today!

I have just called all of the 8 Assembly Members listed below.

Some were kind of short with me, which tells me they are getting a lot of responses from the opposition.

Ms. Walters office told me that she is planning to vote NO, so perhaps we can spare her office another call. LOL

The CA State Assembly voted today on AB 1634 (the "Pet Extinction Act" that requires castration and hysterectomies of all dogs & cats in California by the age of 4 months, with rare exceptions). The sponsor, Lloyd Levine, did not get enough votes to pass the bill on the floor of the assembly, but it is still alive. He is "working" the floor right now for more votes and he hopes to get them today. IF YOU DON'T WANT AB 1634 TO PASS, TODAY IS THE DAY TO MAKE YOUR PHONE CALLS TO THE FOLLOWING 8 ASSEMBLY MEMBERS AT THEIR SACRAMENTO OFFICES. PLEASE DO IT NOW !!! Each call should take you less than a minute.

The 8 legislators listed below abstained today from voting on AB 1634 on the assembly floor today. We need to make sure THAT IF THEY WON'T VOTE NO THAT AT LEAST THEY CONTINUE TO ABSTAIN. If Levine can't get them to vote yes AB 1634 he should not be able to get enough votes to pass AB 1634.
Please call and fax ALL 8 of these legislators NOW. If you are a constituent in their district, be sure to say so. Ask them to PLEASE VOTE NO ON AB1634 OR IF THEY WON'T VOTE NO, THEN CONTINUE TO ABSTAIN.

After you make your call, you can also FAX them - just say PLEASE VOTE
NO ON AB 1634 OR CONTINUE TO ABSTAIN

Re: AB1634 Did NOT pass today!

Further information on the status of this bill:

TO: Sacramento Council of Dog Clubs

FROM : Joan Gibson Reid
Corresponding Secretary

This morning on the Floor of the Assembly, Mr Levine presented his bill, which he termed "a work in progress." After nine Members spoke on the bill - either in support -- or opposition, Mr. Levine moved a call, meaning that he asked that the bill be placed "on call," because he did not have the 41 votes he needed to pass the bill and wanted some time to round up more votes. (Word has it that he has only 37 votes.) After he does his arm twisting, the call will "be lifted" sometime today before the Floor Session closes and the vote recorded.

Opponents who spoke against the bill included Assemblyman Adams (Claremont) Assemblyman Chuck DeVore (Irvine) Assemblyman Bill Emmerson (Rancho Cucamonga), who cited some statistics from PetPAC, Assemblyman Bob Huff (Diamond Bar), Assemblyman Doug La Malfa (Redding) and Assemblyman Pedro Nava (Santa Barbara), who gave a detailed description of how a dog is killed and rendered, and how the process separates the fat from their bones.

Proponents included Assemblyman Dave Jones (Sacramento), Assemblyman Mark DeSaulnier (Martinez) and Assemblyman Mark Leno (San Francisco). Mr. Leno, howver, said he would only support if Mr. Levine would amend the bill to allowing a litter per year "like in Santa Cruz." Mr. Levine answered: "We will take that amendment in the Senate."

Mr Levine promised Assembly Member Lois Wolk he would make amendments in the Senate that would resolve the opposition of farmers with mixed breeds in her district. On that basis, she said she would support the bill today.

The Call could be lifted anytime today.

Re: AB1634 Did NOT pass today!

Ok, unconfirmed, but just heard that the Author pulled his bill until NEXT YEAR!

Woohoo a small victory!

Re: AB1634 Did NOT pass today!

Three cheers for everyone's efforts in California to get this INSANE bill defeated. I'm sure that it will rise from the ashes in another form at some future time, but for now you can breathe easier for a bit.

Now, on to Ohio!!!!!

Re: Re: AB1634 Did NOT pass today!

Great work everyone! I am glad to see Bob Huff's name on the Opposition, he did as he promised he would! As a pet owner, visiting this forum, I would like to thank you all for offering such valuable information!

Re: Re: AB1634 Did NOT pass today!....But all is not decided until FINAL vote on Friday!

No, we cannot breathe easier here in California. Levine has until Friday to get the last 9 votes he needs to pass this insane bill. We need to get those that abstained today to either continue to abstain or to vote flat out NO. It CAN still pass if Levine gets those last votes and you can bet he's going to badger people all day tomorrow and so should we!
