Why so many "crofts"?

I did a count and there are at least 20 plus kennel names with the word "croft" in their kennel name.
I just wondering how this came to be?

I am thinking I heard that Croft means, small farm, in maybe, England ?

A croft is a fenced or enclosed area of land, usually small and arable with a crofter's dwelling thereon. A crofter is one who has tenure and use of the land.
